Stroman may be out for the season but Sancho just pitched an absolute gem. Too bad lack of hitting and fielding mistakes cost him a chance at victory.

Sancho is back to being his best.

Too funny! Guess one would have know what "it" is!
At no point, did his moves ever seem to indicate that he was seriously going for it. BUT, if he was, to me it indicates that he is a very poor judge of talent if he thought that that roster could contend.

From what I recall, he never used the word "contend". He used the word "compete". He sort of had one foot in the mud and one foot out. He wanted to rebuild getting younger and cheaper, but he had pressure to keep ass's in the seats. The two of them made a few moves and if everything worked out, they had long shot at a wild card spot. The starting pitching which was supposed to be our strength was a bust, mix in a missing MVP, veteran SS, and great young closer, and long shot turns into a disaster.

When I hear the phrase "going for it" I consider "it" to mean more than be competitive. I am thinking he means playoffs.

So, in your scenario, it was a combination of not being sincere AND not being a good judge of talent.

What BBB said. Plus the fact that the Yankees and Sox are both very good this year and play the Jays 19 games each. Jays ended 15-4 against the Sox. Maybe a little better against the Yanks. That's a season killer right there. Both NYY and Bosox were even better than expected. Jays are probably roughly .500 against non AL-E opponents because they sucked against TBR as well, but killed the O's.

That's a "long shot second wild card" hopes season that went south. The talent was so-so. But so-so can get you the 2nd WC some years.

Hard to say if he judged the talent properly because most of the key people didn't play this year. Sanchez, Stroman, JD, Tulo, and Osuna. Take 5 key players off any team and see how their season turns out.

While some of the moves they made have been bad, I think some have been good. There was a lot of fan pressure to give Bautista a big contract extension, can you imagine how that 5 years 125 million would look now?

This guy sold Rogers on the fact he can put together a competitive team of a friendly budget, so he's got no real choice except to stay the course until he needs those last few players to compliment the young guns.

I agree with the reality of the situation, but these were shapeero's words. As an example, Estrada (not that he has had much of a season) quoted shapeero's "we are going for it" as a reason for re-signing with the team. Did Estrada re-sign to be on a team that was competitive and play hard every day or to be on a team that had a chance to contend for the playoffs?

I am not talking about what my expectations were, but the bill of goods that shapeero tried to sell us disingenuously in a lame effort to sell tickets.

It's his job to keep money coming in. I know you would like a little more transparency, but what else was he going to say? "Hey fans, I know ticket sales and popularity are the highest they've been in 20 years, but hope you don't mind but were suck for a few years now".

If anyone is to blame in my mind, it's the board of directors that brought him in to do this.

Whether you love or hate Shapiro and his sidekick (forgot his name), you have to give them at least 2 more years

In spite of his supposed mandate to cut payroll, he could have tried bringing in a legitimate starter and a legitimate outfielder to at least give us a team that we could cheer for beyond the middle of June. What good is cutting $30 or 40M when they will lose $100M in lost ticket sales, concessions, team gear and viewership/advertising revenue because this team is being ignored. Plus, what guarantee is there that these young players that he hopes will all blossom to championship calibre and only cost $80M will realize their potential. Aside from Gurriel, I don't see any other players on this roster who have a legitimate chance to become impact players. (Telez has only been here 2 weeks.) He is pinning his hopes on Vlad and maybe Bichette.

I think having to say that we will suck, early on, is better than having to say we suck after having him run the team for 3 years, like he has to do now.

I have said it before, Toronto, with 6M in the GTA and all of Canada as our market should be run like a big market team like other big markets, not like Cleveland (when he was there) or Pittsburgh or Milwaukee.

Question, do you think the way he's run this team for 3 years would be accepted in NY or Boston. Why are we being apologists for him when he has such a big market and an owner with very deep pockets. If those teams make mistakes, they spend some money to correct, or at least improve them, not incrementally weaken the team for 3 successive years and THEN say we have to rebuild.

I think my blood pressure is going up.
