I think Wallace's stock fell quite a bit during the season.
He pretty much stopped hitting home runs after the first month in Vegas; so, pitchers figured out something about him.
Here's results of Wallace's first 2 months in MLB:

Yeah I know he didn't exactly light it up did he.

I remember he hit .299 in Vegas but then I looked at the team as a whole and they had a team average of .300 at the time he got traded.

Well, that was fast.

The acquisition of Rajai Davis settles some issues: a leadoff hitter, speed and back-up for Wells. I think it also means Bautista is the BJ's new 3rd baseman.

And it also means they have the money to go for a big bat, experienced 1st baseman like Konerko or Lee or Dunn.

Would that not be a hoot ? Dunn signs with the Blue Jays ... after JP's idiotic statement several seasons ago.

Top 20 Blue Jay prospects ranked. Top 4 all pitchers, not many good bats in system.
Sounds about right. Everybody wants pitching. Jays have a surplus and can trade for bats.

Yea, I agree with team strategy of emphasizing development of pitchers. The guys ranked 1 -4 all have a chance of being in MLB by around June 2012.
As for hitters they should look at signing proven older veteran hitters on the freee agent market. Guys like Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon and Vladimir Guerrerro.

NO !
I think Damon and Vlad are done. My recommendation to AA is stay away. I am not sure about Abreu either.

Not sure I know those guys in particular are done or not, but it raises the point that at that age the skills can diminish very, very rapidly. As such, the Jays can only sign them as a final piece or two of the puzzle on a short term contract to put them with the big boys. They are still a bit too far away to sign guys like that. Maybe for 2012 and only if they show significantly more improvement (at least 5 games better) in 2011.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking roughly and you explained what I was thinking better. To me after the 11 season they may be in a place where they can spend on a quality veteran free agent hitter. With players like this it's a 1 year deal with maybe a club option for a second year and bonus money for performance on the contract.

In 2011 or 2012 or 2013 I'm thinking they can spend on an '08 type Abreu, an '09 type Guerrerro or an '09 type Damon. To me all of these players performed very well in their first years with new club. I have no idea what the names will be in 2011, 2012 or 2013 but I'm just thinking veteran hitter 35 or older or so who still has something in the tank. Once they reach a threshold of 87 or 89 wins or so, a free agent addition like this is worth looking at.

How do you figure Vlad is done?

His stats for last season are excellent http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guerrvl01.shtml

Okay he fell flat in the world series but he's not the first to do that.

Texas got him for 5.5 mil with an incentive based contract and if the Jays can do the same they should.

I'd take him over Manny in a heart beat.

Agree with you a million %. Konerko too for that matter. If the Jays sign sideshow Manny I will cut the cord with this team forever.

I am aware of his stats last season, but after watching what happened in WS not only his bat, but his fielding has gone down hill. I think the money would be better spent elsewhere.
Where would the Jays play him ? They just got Davis and are said to be interested in Justin Upton, another outfielder and then there is Lind.

I like the idea of Adam Dunn at first if he will come to Toronto.

Vlad could only DH, so that mean playing Lind at first in that scenario.

I believe the asking price for Upton is pretty high as they want players that can help them right now.

Dunn made 12 mil last year so I think that he is out of their price range and only wishful thinking besides J.P. said he doesn't even like baseball, lol.

above anything else, imo, is that they should sort out the bullpen..they seem to be set in the outfield, Bautista goes to 3rd, Lind DH,s and they find someone for 1st base..bull pen is the priority, no?

Starting pitching is always, always, always, the priority.

Agreed, considering the projected strength of the starting pitcher line-up, the bullpen has to be the priority now. Being ranked 10th for 2010 wasn't a great strength and lost them a few games they could have won. I hope they can keep Downs.

Wonder what AA's thought process is here. He may not be the quintessential closer, but he can damn near pitch anywhere else (and well) in relief. He should be a key cog in the 'pen.

Why haven't they tried to nail him down? Is he asking too much? Do they think his skills are diminishing? Is he a problem in the clubhouse? Does he want to pull a Halladay (play for a playoff team)?
