60 years ago we were fighting to stop segregation, now they are fighting for segregation. The world has gone topsy-turvy. Upside down, backwards.

It's like having a 'day without whites' that's happening now on college campuses in the U.S.

The same people who said they suffered under racial discrimination are now the discriminators. It's a sad state of affairs.

To be precise the event is more of an exclusion than
segregation. Whites and non-blacks can attend as an
audience I suppose, but won't have the privilege to wear
a graduation crown. I don't think they ever had to fight
for it as they seem to have the support of the university.
Don't know if the university administration endorsed
it in principle. My guess is, seeing that no other visible
minority groups would be stupid enough to organize
such an event to make a fool out of themselves the
university understand allowing such an exclusive event
won't ever set a precedent for others to follow.

Who are you attempting to fool. Absolutely someone who was of a "incorrect race" would be banned, just the same as at the LGBT club dance you a straight person attempted to "put the moves" on someone who sees themselves as Gay or Lesbian.
Bullshit. Flat out bullshit.

I can absolutely guarantee you that there will be white people at the celebration. In case you missed it, some black people have white family members and friends. Same goes with gay bars. Straight people routinely go with their gay friends to gay bars.

...

For example, in sports the first black guy to play any sport is always awarded and singled out as some kind of superman. But when was the last time you saw an Asian, Indian or Latino athlete get recognized in the same way? Never.....
When did pro sport leagues have rules explicitly banning Asians, Indians, or Latinos?

...My point is, there will never be a reason acceptable for a "whites" only event. Period...
First off, the event is not "black" only. It is a celebration for black students.

Secondly, there are routinely celebrations for all sorts of white groups. There was a Portuguese celebration a couple weeks ago that was funded by the city. Similarly for Greeks, Italians, ...

This, however, is different. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Black Students Association or the Vietnamese Students Association having a reception for graduating members, but having an event that mimics a graduation: sitting graduates in academic regalia that as already stated sends a unfortunate message.
What makes a silly gown and hat a sacred event that people can't do on their own. Maybe you'd be upset that my nephew's daycare held a graduation with imitation hats and gowns.

Also there should be a distinction between different types of exclusion...... ones where there is a negative effect and ones where there isn't an effect.
For example a support group for female victims of rape excluding men? That would absolutely be a good reason for exclusion.

Is it really exclusion when as a non black I have a perfectly fine option?
Or you could just go celebrate with your black friends.

I pretty much agree with everything you are saying. I just don't see this as a form of segregation/ discrimination at all. Just a group that is marginalized in society, celebrating a common bond and achievement. Nothing more.
but if whites students did this, they would be villified to the max

When are people like you going to figure out that it's not an even playing field, so you can't say the "but if white people did this..." bullshit.

Wait until we have true equality, then you can say it.

"but if white students did this" remark on black graduation is as
meaningful as saying "but if white people marched on Washington
for jobs and freedom" in the time of Martin Luther King. Organizers of
the black graduation event are well-intentioned I believe. But I
can't help wondering if the university enabled the event only
because it was the politically correct thing to do.

You are absolutely right,...its NOT an equal playing field,..."whites" could never get away with this.

What you didn't get the memo? Black people are still suffering at the hands of us evil 'white people'. Sad they still see themselves as victims.

So just a few:
I'm not good enough to graduate with White or Asian classmates,
I don't really want to participate in an inclusive society,
I believe in a double standard a White's only graduation ceremony is racist a Blacks only ceremony isn't,
I don't really value the hard work of the Civil Rights Movement to allow me to graduate with my classmates
While it is clear that there are opinions on both sides of the argument, I think your post here is spot on. While I'm sure that these black students believe that there is value in this event, they may want to consider how it is viewed by others. Some might see them as being somewhat tone deaf...

Anyone who says "I'm still right" has already lost the argument! Sheesh...
What argument?

I gave a response to this topic, You called it liberal retort.

Unless you actually say something instead of deflecting, there's no discussion.

You can start by ready the entire article before you comment.

Simply because white people aren't a minority who face disadvantages in society so have nothing in particular to celebrate.
tell that to the struggling poor whites in Appalachia, U.S.A

Id like to hear the commencement speach for these students..

"They said you cant do it, yet here you all are...you have proven your family and friends wrong...you can open a book...you can learn if you study...and you can pass the same tests all the other students had to take."

"When the white folk students had a iPhone 6 plus, but you only had the iPhone 6...without the plus...you still made it to class everyday with what little you were fortunate to have.
You had to hike dozens of stairs every day with nothing on your feet.....but a pair or 200 dollar Nike's...no food in your belly since breakfast....yet it didnt stop you."

Maybe Michelle Obama can say the speach in her preacher tone to make it sound more like an incredible accomplishment.
