The Beyond Meat website has quietly removed a likely inaccurate statistic that purported to show that eating meat increases the likeliness of developing heart disease by 21 per cent and getting cancer by 16 per cent.

The statistic originated from a 2012 Harvard study which focused exclusively on the negative impact of consuming highly processed meat products such as hot dogs or bacon. It did not apply to all red meat, specifically fresh meat, poultry, or fish. Below the graphic was an easily miscible footnote which specified that fresh meat was not part of the study that produced the statistics displayed.

For misleadingly publishing this statistic on their website, Beyond Meat had been coming under heavy criticism that they were “marketing its vegetarian burger as healthier than meat without the science to prove it,” reports CBC.

The company denied that their reason for removing the graphic was the criticism it received, instead saying that the removal was part of a larger update to add more information.

The study itself had also received heavy criticism and had been delayed for review several times, in large part due to the rapidly changing nature of the health science landscape.

“Where is their research saying that — that this is better than eating a small, portion-controlled, lean piece of meat?”said dietitian and nutritionist Rosie Schwartz.

“Science is not an absolute, things evolve,” said Sylvain Charlebois, a professor at Dalhousie University specializing in food distribution and policy.

Charlebois also pointed to an opposing study which suggested the complete opposite of what Beyond Meat had reported: that adults do not need to cut back on their meat consumption.

Methyl cellulose

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methyl_cellulose#Chemistry

Methyl cellulose does not occur naturally and is synthetically produced by heating cellulose with caustic solution (e.g. a solution of sodium hydroxide) and treating it with methyl chloride. In the substitution reaction that follows, the hydroxyl residues (-OH functional groups) are replaced by methoxide (-OCH3 groups).

Different kinds of methyl cellulose can be prepared depending on the number of hydroxyl groups substituted. Cellulose is a polymer consisting of numerous linked glucose molecules, each of which exposes three hydroxyl groups. The Degree of Substitution (DS) of a given form of methyl cellulose is defined as the average number of substituted hydroxyl groups per glucose. The theoretical maximum is thus a DS of 3.0, however more typical values are 1.3–2.6.

Different methyl cellulose preparations can also differ in the average length of their polymer backbones.

Soy protein concentrates are processed selectively by removing the soluble carbohydrate from soy protein flour by either aqueous alcohol or isoelectric leaching. Soy protein concentrates contain at least 65% protein. Defatted flakes or soy flour are used as starting material. During the processing of soy concentrates, objectives are to immobilize the protein while leaching away the soluble carbohydrates, removing the strong flavor components and the flatulence sugars (stachyose and raffinose). In turn, both protein and dietary fiber contents are increased.

There are several different methods to produce soy concentrates (Lusas and Rhee, 1995):

1.

Extraction of flakes with aqueous 20–80% ethyl alcohol.
2.

Acid leaching of flakes or flour.
3.

Denaturing the protein with moist heat and extraction with water (Ohren, 1981).

Alcohol extraction produces the blandest products. Mild heat drying conditions are used in an acidic water extraction process to retain high protein dispersibility index (PDI) (Lusas and Riaz, 1995a). Isoflavone content in soy concentrate depends on whether it has been water-washed or alcohol-washed, as isoflavones are soluble in alcohol. Because of their blander flavor, soy concentrates are often preferred over soy flour. Typically, soy concentrates are used in meat patties, pizza toppings, bakery products and meat sauces.

coconut oil the only healthy plant based oil i trust

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is made from the fat found in the meat of coconut. Contrarily to most vegetable oils, coconut oil is rich in saturated fats. However, you should not worry about the saturated fats in coconut oil, because they are not associated with high blood cholesterol levels or heart diseases, as explained by Mary G. Enig, nutritionist and author of "Know Your Fats." The types of saturated fats found in coconut oil, called medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs, are similar to some fats found in breast milk. MCTs can contribute to a healthier body weight and a decreased risk of infection.

I agree with you regarding Coconut Oil. It is a healthy natural oil that I use to make my omelettes and other deep fried dishes. I just do not trust stuff like canola oil.

hexane is used to make vegetable oils which is used to make these fake meat burgers

Hexane is also a major ingredient in Petroleum Ether. This solvent is used in the crystallisation and or extraction of certain essential oils in plant based products. They are then distilled to remove the hexane etc. But there will always be traces of these ingredients in the end products.

Plants have anti-nutrients, hormone disruptors and other toxins to defend themselves from being eaten. vegans do not understand basic human nutrition and plant biology

If that is true about plants, then what would you feed the cows with?

Cows are herbivores
They are designed to eat plants like grasses

I understand that. But vegetables are always beneficial when added to a diet.

Well there are those who have lived on a mixture of meat as well as vegetarian diets and not suffered from any debilitating diseases. They are still living and in their nineties and healthy without any concerning signs of dementia etc.. They do some basic exercises like cardio / walking / jogging / cycling etc. It is not accurate that vegetarian dishes are not compatible with human diets. There is stuff like avoiding high salt / sugar products in your diets and avoiding sugary drinks like pops, and instead hydrating with water instead, that would help. Cutting out alcohol totally from one's diet is very beneficial as well. These are a facts. Of course you should avoid vegetarian dishes that have too many types of weed + pesticide killers and other repellants sprayed on them on a regular basis. If you grow your own vegetables, that is the best option.
