Veganism is hurting the devoped world where vegan foods are grown

The number of vegans has increased 160 per cent over the past 10 years, but people need to be asking “where has this food come from” as they fill their shopping baskets with the fruits of the world: pomegranates and mangos from India, lentils from Canada, beans from Brazil, blueberries from the US and goji berries from China. Eating lamb chops that come from a farm a few miles down the road is much better for the environment than eating an avocado that has travelled from the other side of the world.

As we greedily plunder the world’s bread basket, it’s the consumer who benefits, while those at the source can be left high and dry. Take avocados and quinoa, whose prices have been pushed up so much by Western demand that they’ve become unaffordable to those who depend on them in their country of origin

Let’s ‘avo some of that

Kenya – the world’s sixth largest exporter of the fruit – banned exporting avocados on Tuesday because the country’s supply is at risk. The Agriculture and Food Authority says the average price of a 90kg-bag of avocados has reached 2,560 Kenyan shillings (£18), the highest since May 2014. The majority of shortages have been seen in the most popular varieties, fuerte and hass, but across the board Kenya has seen an 18 per cent increase in its export in the past five years, up to 50,000 tons in 2016.

And they’re not the only ones: Australia is also short of the green stuff too, which is causing self-imposed rationing in Queensland as prices have doubled per tray in a year up to A$95 (£54). This shortage has been caused by production being down in Mexico, where the fruit originated, even though production of avocados there has doubled in three years in a bid to remain the global leader of avocado sales.

Back in December Mexico was considering importing avocados, which have been a staple in the country for tens of thousands of years. The country’s economy secretary, Ildefonso Guajardo, said although Mexico now supplies around 45 per cent of the world’s avocados, it wasn’t ruling out importing them for their own consumption. And that’s because the price per kilo is equivalent to the daily minimum wage, 80 pesos (£3). And it’s expected to stay at this level too, causing detrimental effects to those for whom this is a staple.

Now, Mexico makes more money from exporting the stoned fruit than it does from petroleum, and it has become a driving force in illegal deforestation to make way for planting more avocado trees.

Back in 2013 – which the UN dubbed the year of quinoa – prices of the so-called miracle grain of the Andes had reportedly become too expensive for local people to buy. But this grain is a staple part of the region’s diet. The price of the superfood has trebled since 2006 to reach $7 (£5) a kilogram – more expensive than chicken – causing average quinoa consumption in the region to fall in 2014.

Beyond Burger ingredients: water, pea protein isolate, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, contains 2% or less of the following: cellulose from bamboo, methylcellulose, potato starch, natural flavor, maltodextrin, yeast extract, salt, sunflower oil, vegetable glycerin, dried yeast, gum Arabic, citrus extract (to protect quality), ascorbic acid (to maintain color), beet juice extract (for color), acetic acid, succinic acid, modified food starch, annatto (for color).
I avoid any food with that much packaging and that many ingredients. Actually, I avoid food with more than a 5 or 6 ingredients. A good burger paddy can be made with fresh lamb, pork, or beef - just add an egg, some salt, fresh pepper, crushed garlic, tarragon, thyme and maybe some oregano and that is it. Of course, problems emerge with the buns as they are stuffed with junk. It is so easy to eat clean and simple but increasing dependency on packaged food designed to travel long distances and stay "fresh" for weeks, months, years requires food to be stuffed with these "extras"...

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith had 'intervention' with son Jaden for 'wasting away' as vegan

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are opening up about a time they were scared for their son's health.

The Smith family convened for an honest discussion on food in the latest episode of "Red Table Talk" Monday. During the discussion, the couple recalled how their 21-year-old son's vegan diet made them worried for his health.

"Will and I had a bit of an intervention with Jaden because he's a vegan now, but we realized he wasn't getting enough protein," Pinkett Smith said. "So he was wasting away."

According to Pinkett Smith, Jaden wasn't getting the sustenance he needed.

"He just looked drained," she said. "He was just depleted. He wasn't getting enough nutrients."

Will Smith remembered the toll his son's eating habits took on his health, recalling how Jaden had "dark circles under his eyes" and "even a little grayness" to his skin.

"We got really nervous, but you're definitely looking better now," he added.

If you want a highly processed piece of fake meat just eat a beyond meat burger. Years ago Harvey's had veggie burgers. I tried it once and did not like it. A month later I ordered a regular burger and they gave me a veggie burger. I complained and they gave me a real burger. They were trying to push the fake burgers out that no one wanted. My prediction is that it is a fad and will fade out.

Ok,ok, I'm here lol. First of all, no one said Beyond meat is a health food. It is slightly better than the animal based version, for a few reasons. Wouldn't you rather have plants and some salts and a few preservatives than animal fat with basically no fiber, salts and preservatives? Pea protein sounds better to me than ground up eye balls and assholes. Beyond burgers have a lot less fat than animal ones, use 80% less valuable resources to make like food and water, and taste pretty similar if you ask me. Come bear witness with me and Toronto Cow save to look the cows in the eyes before they go to be beheaded alive and see how your carnivorous instincts kick in. Plant based is better for you, the animals and the planet, so get with the program already. You sound like whining children

Plants have anti-nutrients, hormone disruptors and other toxins to defend themselves from being eaten. vegans do not understand basic human nutrition and plant biology

Plants ... defend themselves from being eaten
The plant paradox explains this.

Ok, hunt it with what your biologically given and eat it raw then...
Some meats can be eaten raw when they are not farm raised with antibiotics and raised as nature intended.
Everyone differs and some foods can cause inflammation while being beneficial to others.

Humans are omnivores, either extreme is not optimal.

The real problem is the carbohydrate after the industrial revolution.
