Tom Jones is tops in my books, but the "Grille" on Queensway has this swiss melt steak with mushrooms that is in all honesty very good.

Yonge & Gerrard

Anyone recall a place on Yonge just north of Gerrard (east side) that specialized in steaks. I think it closed in the late 90's.

Tacky decor, booths with tiny jukeboxes, rude service but you could get a 12 oz filet for 12 bucks and it was very good.

Obviously not in the class of Carman's, Bigliardi's etc but at least half the price.

I remember the place, but for the life of me I can't remember the name either. This is actually bothering me......what was the name of that place?

It looked like a Nickels, but it was not....at least I don't think it was.

Do you still get a free steak at Ponderosa's on your birthday? Or was that Denny's?

Now it comes to me

That place on Yonge just north of Gerrard was called LINDY's.

Arguably the "best bang for a buck" steakplace in Toronto's history.

For a trucker's stop, Master Steak makes a dynamite steak and eggs breakfast. It's just off the 401 at Dixie... yummy
I've tried Hy's, Tulips, Le Biftheque, Keg, and the Octagon but none of them come close to Master Steak. It is a trucker's stop as mentioned earlier but man they make a mean steak and the sauteed mushrooms are awesome.

I lived downtown in the early 60's, and remember that place. Always thought it was a hangout for the gay community....Times have changed, back then would never have said "gay".

Harbor 60...

The absolute best steak is at Harbour 60, across from the Air Canada Centre.
I have sampled them all, Ruth Chris, Hys, Keg, Bardis, Bigliardis, Craftsteak, Smith and Wollenskys, and Mortons. Hands down Harbour 60 is the best.
...used to be the best until they switched from U.S. Prime to Canadian beef. On my last trip I dropped 3 bills for the wife and I, and left pissed as hell...the waiter even acknowledged that since they had made the switch people were complaining (he was the one who culed me in that the switch had been made...all I asked was "WTF"). Given the now (relatively) poor quality and the OUTRAGEOUS drink prices...I haven't been back.

Morton's used to be my most consistent favorite - I've been to Morton's all over the world, and typically they very consistently deliver, and for less than Harbor Sixty (Dinner for two @ Mortons is typically $225 - $250). Alas, on my last couple trips there I've again been like "WTF"...and again the waiter reported that a switch had been made from U.S. Prime to Canadian beef.

I've been to Ruth Chris in Mississauga, not bad. I've been to Barbarian's in the city...pretty good. And I agree with others that Le Biftique is a pretty good value, though can be inconsistent. But at this point, with both Harbor Sixty and Morton's leaving something to be desired (at least at those price points), I don't know if I can recommend ANYPLACE in the city for (world class) steak. What I do now is just wait until I am back in the U.S....

WH, I've never seen a serious player in a Keg establishment. These guys just kids that hang there, or did they get their Xmas bonus cheque early?

I had Harbour 6O twice this year and loved it both times.

Hy's last month and it was better than average.

Barbarian's in the spring and really liked the kitschy decor and the owner is a mensch. Food was good but not great.

I had a 14 oz New York at Bymark on Friday with much great red wine and a 150 year old Grand Marnier after (Company paid) and found it very, very good.

Ruth's Chris is alright but not as good as it was the 1st time I went. I think the novelty wears off.

I am going to check out the Town Bike at the keg though. Sounds like the meat has been well tenderized!
