So what The Stockyard's secret?

They fry their chicken in cast iron skillets, I will not pay for anything that's deep fried.

I've never tried it but I hear Chicken Chicken at Woodbine race track is good.

The Korean joints supposedly have a great chicken too but hear they drench it with some sauce.

Reviews are split on Stockyards. I meant to try it this summer but ended up reading some bad reviews on the internet.

I buy Churches because it's close by and cheap. I usually get the Manager's special for $5 plus tax.

It includes a Thigh, Leg and whole wing. Even the spicy is not very tasty but once I get it home and get my own hot sauce on it, it's palatable.

I've never tried Popeyes. How does it compare to KFC? (which I loathe and find dripping with grease)

I'd prefer a fried chicken that is crispy and not dripping with grease. Yeah yeah, I know it's FRIED chicken, but I hate the soggy kind.

When I want good fried chicken I go to Chick N Joy.
In Scarborough at Morningside and Kingston Rd(S/W corner) in the Tim Horton's / No Frills / McDonald's plaza.

Chick N Joy has Monday and Tuesday 2 piece + fries specials. Also sides specials. Chick N Joy allows you to sub fries with a side.


Take the Tim Hortons/ No Frills exit from mall and drive to mall across road East of Morningside. KFC is there and as Tue 2 piece + fries special.

Try the extra spicy at Popeyes. Popeyes is crispier than KFC. Hard to judge soggy factor as somedays is oiler than others. I think it depends on how much time chicken has to drain off oil. Popeyes has 2 or 3 piece + biscuit specials. Daily specials posted in windows, so drive by to see whats available.

Popeyes also has tasty chicken/fish/shrimp sandwitches. Not sure if they still have sandwitch specials on Wednesdays. Doctors have ordered me off deep fried stuff if I want to delay being 6 feet under.

Popeye's reminds me of what KFC was 20 years ago, golden delicious fried chicken with crispy brown crust. They have many locations in the city so they are hands down the best as far as chains go. Stockyards is great chicken and most of their food but i do not have time to go to their only location and wait for it to be done. I appreciate they make it fresh in front of me but they normally have line-up's and even if you phone ahead you wait.

Cook used to work at stockyards or something of the sort.

A bit more expensive at $17 for half chicken, biscuit and choice of sides but closer to downtown.

Else hit up the Korean Hot Taste at Yonge Bloor.

+1 imo KFC does not taste the same as it did in the 90's and 80's. It use to be so tasty back then. Now there's a strange after taste that gross's me out. Maybe they changed the oil but i cant eat there anymore. Plus seems like KFC pieces are much smaller now then in the 90's. Popeye's are bigger and tastes much better. KFC really lost their way and Popeye's got more popular.

Example: There was a KFC at Bayview and Shepp for over 20 years. A few years ago they closed down and a Popeye's opened up and everytime I drive by the place looks busy.

I stopped eating KFC even after being given two meals for free from the regional manager, i told him that this is not what i remember as KFC chicken. Popeye's is really good chicken and it is "halal " to boot.

They did change the oil and pieces are definitely smaller. I still enjoy KFC, but it's not as good as it once was.

A great thank you to everyone for the input. So far, I have tried Churches, Popeye and Stockyards.

Churches - subpar to KFC.

Popeye's chicken pieces (manager's special at $5.65 for three pieces) are definitely crispier than KFC. A little bit salty.

As for Stockyards, I was surprised by the small place. Looks like a bar with high stools. You can watch the cooks (two of them) do the cooking within arm reach.

The chickens tasted good. However, I felt extremely thirsty after eating a few pieces. I drank several glasses of water and still felt thirsty. I wonder if they add MSG to the chicken.

The wife and I went to Popeyes last week. It was literally dropping with grease, far too much to enjoy.
We did eat mostly because we were very hungry. The chicken was good and I suspect, it was very busy at the time, that if the chicken had more time to drain it would have been more appetizing.

I do not like KFC any more. Wife always feels sick after. We only go there for the Taco Bell part of the menu now a days.

lol ... If you stopped at the Morningside/Lawrence/Kingston Rd location you must remember the old wooden floor when it was across the street where the bank is now.

Agreed. Chick N Joy blows Popeye's, Mary Brown's, Church's, KFC out of water IMHO. Problem is that Chick N Joy is east end fare (Scarborough, Pickering, and Whitby locations). Now that I am a west end boy, will have to give Stockyards a try.
