Agree, but it's a little expensive and the staff cop a really irritating Queen W attitude.
Chippy's is handsdown the best fish and chips I've ever had. Their fries are amazing too. If you don't like the Queen W vibe, there's also one on Bloor close to Bathurst.

My place

I use fresh halibut filets, eggwash, corn starch and crushed stone wheat thins.

The double dip the filets in the egg-wash; the first time to adhere the corn startch and the second for the cswt. Then I fry it in grape seed oil. I know its more expensive than canola oil but it has a very smoking point. It seals in the filets making them moist and flakey with a minimum of excess grease.

I cut Yukon Gold potatoes into fries and soak them for 15 minutes then I double fry them. The result are fries that are crispy on the outside and soft within.

Sprinkle of sea salt, drizzle of malt vinegar and a pint of Boddington's.

Buon Apetitto!

Black Cat on Avenue Road was pretty good when I was last there 10 years ago. I don't know if it is still there.
Black Cat is still in business, same owner, same great fish & chips! Located on the East side of Avenue Road just south of Wilson.

After reading this thread, I going there for lunch!

I'll have to give that one a try. A little north on Weston, a couple of blocks north of Lawrence is a place caled Sun Crisp. It's easily one of the best I've ever had.

Being of British/Irish heritage I always enjoy a great fish and chips with mushy peas and coleslaw. Here are my choices

Mississauga - The Belfast Lounge. Its sit in, not take out though but hands down the best fish and chips in the west end. To the guy that said Caz's, you're nuts. That might be the worst fish I've ever tasted. I could hardly swallow it without feeling naucious.

Toronto - High Street Fish and Chips in the Donwoods Plaza (DVP and Lawrence area). I tried it based on recommendation by John Oakley on 640 and he was bang on. Frank McNie is the fish and chips guru of Toronto and this is his latest venture. I remember first trying his fare back in the 80's when he opened up a 'chippy' around the corner from my house. Top notch.

There is a tiny little cinder block bunker (painted white) on the south side of Harbord near Brunswick. No room to eat inside but there are picnic tables outside. His fish is pretty good. I don't even know if it has a name posted.

The place is about the size of a small garage and may have been one at one time as it is at the entrance to an alley.

Chippy's on Queen West is also good. (Not a sit-down restaurant either.)

Harbord Fish and chips is the one why not is referring to. Famous place.
Bring an appetite though because they give you a shitload of thick fries.

Sun Crisp has been around for many years. I used to go there in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Glad to hear it is still so great!

McCanns - Broad St, lower Manhattan area. Either the best or it was one too many pints of Bass. No longer there. Out of Biz, late 90's.
