I loved the movie, I'll see it over and over again.

But the way computer animated technology is going Avatar will be severely outdated by the year 2020.
Thats why I dont think it should win the Oscar

Can THAT MANY people be wrong? Just saying...
Big numbers doesn't necessarily mean "good". Along with Avatar, Transformers 2 was one of the best performaing movies domestically and internationally. Transformers 2 is hardly a great movie. But both have special effects galore. Big budget special effects usually does well.

Titanic and Twilight made loads of dough.

Mostly from teenage girls; these are chick flicks for the rest of us.

The stats also don't indicate people seeing the movie multiple times.

The more sophisticated films tend to be seen by older viewers who aren't going to see a movie 10x times.

Very true... but then there's a HELLUVA big difference between $2.24 billion and $835 million... (BTW- Transformers 2 didn't even crack the top 20...)

I think its safe to say that the #1 movie of all time would have to be pretty dam good.

visually a great movie, but so is any kids 3D movie if you smoke some weed prior to going in (which I do regularly unbeknownst to my kids when I take them to the movies)
Funny you should mention that. There was a trailer running before Avatar for Alice In Wonderland in 3D. If that isn't an excuse to roll a fattie, I don't know what is!

I don't like things that are over-hyped, especially before it was even released. I like underdogs.

Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, etc. started out as unknown, low key. They've "earned it" imo; I had a chance for them to grow on me.

Not really sure I'd include Indiana Jones with that group.

I can't imagine anything (other than strippers in my hotel room) could keep my attention for over 2 1/2 hours. Don't think I'll do it.
I'm like that too, I have severe ADD, my attention span is almost non-existent.
But this movie you will like, I guarantee it

Definitely yes. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out of nowhere and gradually grabbed the public. It had 'legs' in film idiom. It was the next three that were overhyped, of which only "Last Crusade" is watchable.

I agree... but perhaps LAS0023 was confused because you got the title wrong... It was actually called "Raiders of the Lost Ark", it wasn't until the second one came out that they started the whole Indiana Jones thing...

(And yes, Last Crusade is the best of the 3 sequels... Long Live Sean Connery!)

How could Raiders have come out of nowhere? It had 3 of the hottest names in Hollywood, Lucas, Spielberg and Ford.

Remember that production started in 1980 for a release in 1981. Tom Selleck was originally cast and contracted to play Indy. Due to the succes of 'Magnum P.I.' and capitalizing on his coming new fame, CBS screwed Selleck out of the role by adding more episodes of Magnum and therefore not making him available for the shooting schedule of Raiders. As Lucas is the one who owns the 'Indy Jones' franchise, he hired Spielberg to direct in a way to compensate him for not getting the new James Bond directing job (back then, the producers of Bond did not want an American directing a Bond film). When they were screwed for a leading man they thought that maybe this Ford guy could work. Ford was not at all the box office star he was destined to become. He had only done 'A New Hope' and 'Empire' in supporting roles and no one knew if he could carry or open a film. Also, Spielberg and Lucas were better known for Sci-Fi adventure at the time and a World War II period piece with an unproven leading man (and a TOTALLY unknown leading lady with no charm or charisma whatsoever!) was an iffy undertaking. In the end, Lawrence Kasdan's script and a committee of creative minds proved the winner. So much so that Spielberg finally got to direct Connery in 'Last Crusade' and got the last laugh on the Bond people since that is the whole reason why the 'Indy Jones' franchise exists in the first place.

Actually, I'd say Spielberg was best known for Jaws at the time, which after Star Wars, was the biggest movie of all time, not adjusting for inflation. Lucas' success may have been in sci-fi, but the Star Wars movies were very mainstream. While Ford may not have had a record as a leading man, he was still very popular after Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back and combined with the creators of the 2 highest grossing movies of all time, made everyone aware of Raiders before it even opened. And it opened at #1...something that movies "coming out of nowhere" don't accomplish.

I just found out that Avatar isn't cutting it any more and it has drop out of the top 10 movies after 100+ days in release. Gee, it's only made $2.7 Billion. Dumb luck I guess.
