Mirror Universe
As for the movie's storyline, nothing new.... big corporation wants to make money, indigenous people in the way, hero saves the day, happy ending.
... To me it was a cut n paste job of different films/characters -- Aliens, LOTR nazgul, Gorillas in the Mist, Nausicaa Valley of the Wind, Laputa, Final Fantasy series.

Gets 6/10 from me.
also a response to mookie. Is any movie really original anymore? You can always find elements/parts similar to previous movies and books. Yes, it was predictable, but it was still enjoyeable. I give it 9.5/10.

I predicted this movie was going to be one of the BEST time hits ever. Anyone who says otherwise has a screw loose!
See my thread where everyone yells at me claiming the movie was going to fail.

Gyaos Baltar.
Is this one a movie? I don't think so!

And it is now #1 for Domestic Box Office as well...

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm

Looks like it overtook Titanic yesterday...

Hmmmm... I wonder what kind of revenue it will generate in DVD/ Blu-ray sales!
If you take titanic as an example. It's pulled in $1.8 billion in theaters and an estimated 1.3 billion in sales and rentals todate. It's going to be big numbers, literally off the charts. The only mitigating circumstance might be the internet downloads and streaming available now and not so in the late 90's, but still. It's pulling in revenue at the 'rate' that Titanic was 3 weeks into it's run. Avatar is still being being shown in more theaters than Titanic, except for 'T's March break runs. No one seems to want to be kicked off the train yet. Watch for the March Break numbers for Avatar. It could be interesting.

You have a point, but with such a movie as digitally enhanced as AVATAR is... I suspect that many of the D-L'ers will purchase it anyway. I'm a also D-L'er as I have admitted in this forum, but with movies like this... a store bought copy to get ALL the benefit for the HD reproduction is worth the $$$ IMHO. I will definitely be purchasing the Blu-ray for this one...

Agreed. It's a hollywood blockbuster. I don't watch hollywood blockbusters for original and innovative scripts.

Well, I FINALLY had a chance to see it. Took the family to the IMAX 3D playing of the film... I have to say, it totally lived up to the expectation and then exceeded it. The flight scenes were simply amazing...

I will likely see it again, and will then buy the Blu-Ray. They are rumored to be developing a 3D Blu-ray version of the film as well.

(Is it just me, or did all those Na'vi chicks have really perky boobs and very well formed asses!! Well aside from the tails of course... LOL)

overrated commercialized bullshit

script is so weak I wanted to cry

visually a great movie, but so is any kids 3D movie if you smoke some weed prior to going in (which I do regularly unbeknownst to my kids when I take them to the movies)

If you want an avant-garde script, go see a TIFF movie. I knew what I was going to get with a James Cameron big budget Hollywood blockbuster. Action and special effects. And I got it big time.

That's what we did as well... We had tickets for the 1:20- IMAX 3D show at Mississauga Coliseum... Bought the tickets on-line Wednesday morning and was at the theater at 12ish to pick them up... The line up to get into the theater at that point was ALREADY 20 or so people long....

Worth the wait though. We all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hard to believe it was 10 years in the making. And to be honest, I had no idea what the movie was about until I started seeing the marketing...

Here's 2 really cool trailers...

http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/

Quick synopsis for those not in the know: A paraplegic marine goes to a distant planet whose atmosphere is poisonous to human's so they "grow" avatars made of human/ Na'vi DNA and "import" the consciousness of the host via some sort of regulated telepathy. So this marine goes there with the intention of infiltrating the Na'vi tribe to gain intelligence (I won't tell you why...), but ends up meeting a sexy Na'vi chick! (Who'd a thunk it! LOL). As the movie progresses, he is torn between his loyalty to the Marines, and his love for the Na'vi babe.

The 3D special effects are unbelievable! The story (as others have said) is similar to Dances With Wolves/ Pocahontas....

Mrs. CG is not much of a Sci-Fi kinda girl to be honest... and although that was the initial hook for me as well, the story grabs you and won't let you go, and by the time the credits are rolling, you feel for the characters.

$2.2 billion worldwide... http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avatar.htm

Can THAT MANY people be wrong? Just saying...
