It'll be curious to see the divorce rates over the next year or two from this time forward.
I wonder how big a spike we'll see if any, or maybe a blip?
There were only about 9 million real names in the first data dump, out of the 32 million accounts. Most accounts never paid so never had a real name there. I haven't downloaded the second file but the file listing doesn't look like customer data (anyone know?).

While a boat load of people who are now fucked over I don't know that 9mil across Canada/US/UK will actually make a statistical difference in the national divorce rate.

Of the 9mil likely a bunch are already split, were never in a relationship, or are married to partners who will never bother to check.

There will be some high profile cases and cases that make the news but beware of thinking that means it will be statistically significant.

Yup tell that to the judge when she slaps yo ass with them papers....you know what would be even worse is seeing your wife on there, although for some it might be somewhat reassuring to justify this hobbying[
Though I'm not married, I was just thinking what you posted.

So even if you have a dynamic I.P. address, whatever is assigned to you that day or in your browsing session, is still unique to you for THAT moment in time or session, no?

Also, what if I don't refresh or switch off my modem? Will my 'dynamic' I.P. address be unchanged until I re-boot?
It will expire on its own sooner or later
From what I have seen the 2nd tier ISPs (eg Teksavvy) will give new IP alot more frequently than top tier (eg Bell, who Teksavvy rents line from)

That is correct - unless it expires/changes, even a dynamic IP is assigned to a user.

And right - IP addresses cannot be assigned to two different users at any given moment in time.

As to what the other member was saying about modem reboot changing IP, that's slightly misleading. From Wikipedia:

As I was saying, it depends on the IP lease/renew period established by the ISP netadmin.
Real life shows you are very unlikely to get same IP
Also a "long" lease means more than 24 hours

There are many tools to test what IP you are on if you feel like testing

Holy shit, 2nd data load dumped. Includes emails from CEO who worked at AM:

http://gizmodo.com/the-ashley-madison-hackers-just-dumped-more-data-a-lot-1725392927
Second dump is a FAKE
News already confirmed files are corrupted so dont waste your bandwidth

The fact that already more than half the info released is proven fake says to me they cobbled together some spam lists and claimed it is real thing
Bunch of fake emails + corrupted credit cards?

Lots of hype no substance

How easily can data be forged and planted to insinuate immoral behavior upon an otherwise upstanding person?
There are always ways and means to discredit and extort people for money and power.

Do the ends justify the means?

Be very careful as you gaze into Pandora's Box.
Data can be faked pretty easily but I can tell you that the data I had for my account was the actual data from Ashley Madison. They had the name, address, email, birthday, profile description, etc, that I had used on AM. Fortunately I put fake information there.

But that convinced me that they really do have the actual AM data it is not made up. Many people put fake names like I did but the ones who paid with a credit card have their real names there.

Anyone using REAL LIFE email addresses and names etc for anything on the Internet other than purchases over secure connections and with reputable sites, get what they deserve.

Fake names, addresses, etc. are the only way to secure identities in this Internet age... don't use any real info anywhere, or risk the consequences. Make up an on-line persona, give that persona an on-line "virtual" existence and use that. It's the only way.

This isn't rocket science people...

I guess people thought that Ashley Madison was a secure, reputable site when they signed up. Problem is that they were storing real name data from the credit card transactions, something they had no good reason to do. They should have discarded that data after processing the payment, but they didn't.

Cheating is not a crime either
Not in Canada, but in some US States adultery is still illegal (although rarely prosecuted).

The people that really need to worry are US army personnel. Adultery in armed forces can get you court martialled and discharged. The Pentagon is investigating this hack btw

Some clarity on the data: the emails that all the media are talking about are what people used to sign up. Lots are fake and unconfirmed and so far, this is the only source of information people have been posting publicly on searchable web sites.

The credit card info is the problem. Your card is not in danger as only the last 4 digits were stored, but all the information you need to enter confirming that this was your card is there. Real name, address, IP, city, province, country, date you paid and how much you paid.

No one that I know of so far has put out a searchable database with this information. Legally, I'm assuming you can get in huge trouble by doing this, but it will come.

I'm on there. I thought I was doing everything right and before this happened, I was golden. Had some fun with a few ladies and none had any idea of who I was outside of a fake email address. They knew what I looked like and my first name, that's it. It was perfect.

But the credit card...fuck me. I'm incredibly cautious and took a lot of steps to avoid being caught. Hell, I didn't even tell my closest friends. That's how people get busted, they are sloppy and tell people. You have to pay if you want to message anyone on that site though and I figured that since the wife has no access to my credit card history, it should be ok.

The only saving grace to all of this is the sheer volume of information and likelihood that someone would have to really look for it. However, all it takes is one person to see your name and start passing the info on. I found a guy that works down the hall from me. Every time I see him I'll have to wonder if he did the same and found me.

I'll be living on pins and needles for a while, no doubt about it. I have a ready made explanation to go if the day comes, but it probably won't matter...I'll be fucked. We'll see.
