I feel the leafs are already loaded with offence, we need solid defence for the next few years while we have Matthews signed . Imho this year is pretty much done they don’t look to me like they could go deep even if they sneak in Would love to see them make a solid trade and grab a good strong defenceman with term on his deal
According to some people, Sandin (currently with the club), Mikko Kokkonen and Jasper Lindgren are supposed to be really good defensemen (where have I heard that song before?). (Luke Schenn was also supposed to be a really good defenseman.)

According to a couple of TERBs, they are really impressed with Nick Robertson who is a small forward which according to them means Nick has both speed and skills.

The Leafs did that already when Matthews and Marner were RFA's. Paid them UFA money while they were still RFA's. Where has that gotten the Leafs so far?
How much more money will Matthews and Marner want in 4 or 5 years or sooner.
You clearly feel that M&M are not the guys to lead us to the promised land. They don't have grit. They will be exhausted from too much ice time.
So why do you even consider the scenario of resigning them? We should dump them, right? How would GM Dubarts handle this with a long term model? Let them walk and use the saved money to get free agents like McDavid and/or Byfuglien. Stamkos. Kucherov. Doughty. A modern GM like you has to be thinking a few steps down the line.

You are good at pointing out the problems but have offered not one concrete solution, like eliminating field goals. Who do they let go, how much many will they save and who in particular should they target?

Shouldn't you be off somewhere cheering for the Golden Gate Warriors?
Hey, if the team in the city of Tampa can be named after a body of water instead of the city, then Frisco can name a team for a bridge that goes over a body of water.

BTW, when the '89 World Series earthquake hit, I was in a bus at the midway point on the Golden Gate Bridge. It shook like crazy for about 5 seconds. Thankfully I am still here to annoy, irritate and badger certain other members. I may have some bad qualities as well.

Philosophically, I disagree. I think you need to maximize the time you have with Matthews, Marner and Tavares by adding as many tough, experienced guys to support them and drive up their scoring production. For me, it's ok to win games 5-4 or 6-5 in wild west shootouts, as long as you're still winning, and the young studs are happy with their numbers. Your goalies may carry you bit too if your D is weak, but it may be a strategy to follow, especially if your D IS weak but one of your goalies can get healthy and hot in the playoffs.

The Leafs recalled defenseman Timothy Liljegren to-day. He along with Sandin (already with the club), Jasper Lindgren and Mikko Kakkonen are supposed to be the Leaf defense of the ????????

Fearless prediction: If Leafs don't win the Cup at least once in the next 4 years, Keefe, Dubas and Shanahan will be gone. They won't have to worry about re-signing Matthews.
