Yes, it's true. Back in the old days, Italians were called 'wops' or 'ditch-diggers' or 'dagos'. And yes, they were treated badly by the anglos. I was lucky, myself. I had an Italian mother but an anglo father so my last name never gave me away. If I ever confided to anyone I was part Italian I almost always regretted it because if any other kids found out, they'd all call me 'wop' or 'dago' and it hurt. :(
Wow, thank goodness times have changed!

They have? Look at the poll results, the only thing thats changed is the guy who didn't like getting called wop is now the guy telling people they aren't real Canadians.

Cheers mate, we can agree on that

Human race has made it so far, I'm sure we can kick ass a few decades longer.
Or at least till I'm dead, after that you fuckers can do whatever you want :D
Lol ... selfish bastid! Unfortunately, that's probably the attitude of most Canadians 'real' or not ...

doesn't bode well, does it?

Wrong. Your numbers are WAY off. There's not than many in all of Canada.

I said yes. However, the original question is loaded. many people have different definitions of what `Canadian` is. Is it birth? Ancestory? Pigmentation? Accent? Name? How long they, and/or their family has lived here? Are they included in the census?

Not trying to be difficult, but the definition of `Canadian` is a very subjective concept. It changes on a official and individual/subjective level. I used my definition and said `yes`.

If they have their citizenship papers - then yes.

If they don't, then no.

Simple as that.
Sums it up nicely.

Those who are concerned with the suffering of innocent people in the conflict in Sri Lanks...I have no problem with. But those who think that Canada should support an armed revolution in Sri Lanks...those I have a problem with.

If you were born here, you're Canada.
If you've lived here for most of your life, your Canadian.
We all came from far and wide to settle here. So it's either the only true Canadians and natives, or all those that live and Canada and share the same set of values are Canadians.

The fact that Tamils are still concerned about the killing occurring in Sri-Lanka does not make them any less Canadian. They are simply concerned about those living in country the country they came from.
Just like a person of Italian, Irish, British or Chinese origin should be concerned about what goes on where he came from.

If we want Canada to be a mosaic, we need to be aware of the struggles these people face, and be compassionate.

It amazes me that the 65% who say the Tamils are not true Canadians want them to obey the law and not blockade the roads. Yet these morons ignore the law that says the Tamils ARE indeed true Canadians. They are probably too stupid to recognize their own hypocrisy. :p

Really! I honestly had no idea that was the case. Horrible!

My friend, business as usual here amidst the humans. Xenophobia and tribalism is the standard state of affairs and should surprise no one. This episode is merely one more instance of the same...

I suspect that many of the people who came out to support those who are fighting for the freedom of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka are good decent people too. Of course, we good decent folks in Canada who know nothing about Sri Lanka, nor give a rats ass about what goes on there, get rather upset when good decent people ask us to give two shits about evils occurring elsewhere.

Does anyone else find it odd that the Tamil Tigers are terrorists? They've been fighting the same war for 20+ years against a really oppressive government (if half of what has allegedly been done to Tamils in Sri Lanka is true) and have taken up rather nasty tactics (some would call them terrorist type actions) in their war.

I wonder if the Sri Lankan government will treat Tamils like human beings after they've crushed the Tamil Tigers, or will it simply be business as usual and we here in Canada simply will hear nothing of the slaughter and injustices perpetrated on the Tamils?

It will be interesting to see as this story unfolds...
