Wasn't THAT one of the big knocks on M$ by Mac fanboys?
Seem to recall them and even YOU, always laughing, saying Mac will last much much longer than a PC before needing to be replaced. Heck, now you say a Mac should be changed as frequently as a PC???......PLUS it costs you DOUBLE TO TO DO THAT!!!
Your emphasis on the major headache that mac users will encounter when they upgrade to Snow Leopard contradicts this point.

The G4 processor was created in 1999. The G5 in 2002. Let's be generous and use G5 processor. That would be 7 year old tech that is finally obsolete.

Most people would consider that an excellent return on investment. Especially when compared against that article I linked where year old hardware was being turned into paperweights when Vista launched.

BTW: I'm still using a 12 years old Gateway PC with no problems, running XP Pro & Ubuntu 9.04!....
12 yrs ago it came with Windows 95....
And just like the extremely frugal person that makes their own soap, most people will not use their PC in the manner.

That's a different issue.
Many Apple addicts claim PCs don't last as long as a Mac. This myth was debunked on another thread here on TERB where some PC users said they still use some PCs that are 20 years old. Fact is there are many PC and Mac users who know little about what makes a computer work. Windows needs proper PM or it bogs down getting slower and slower as junk accumulates. Many never do their proper PM, them ask a salesman why it's running slow and are told they need a new PC because it's just getting old. When routine PM or a reformat will make their PC run like new again. Many salesmen, wanting a sale, won't tell customers this and just sell them a new PC.

Have heard Mac salesmen do the same, saying "well it's a crappy PC and that's what they all do", hoping to sell them a Mac.

Woody's point fails for every MacSnob who just goes happily on using Panther or Tiger or… (my woodshop 'puter faithfully does what I want w/ System 8.6). Same goes for the WinDopes who made Vista work and choose to stick with it instead of going to W7.

And there's poor OTB who posted an article everyone's ignoring while they catfight about OSs.

In the various Linux repositories there are presently ~7000 FREE apps & programs available for use PLUS the entire OS! When you shop the Apple Store and Best Buy you see racks of pricey Mac software that generally costs much more than M$ software!

Actually, I never said that Macs last much longer. Macs just last as long as people find them useful for their purposes. Sure, they may last LONGER than comparable Wintel machines but in the current situation, I think that the majority of Mac users are already on Intel machines.

And, you're ducking my question, what software do you use?

Not sure what you mean?
I use whatever I need.
Gimp, Open Office, Pidgin, Skype, various torrent sw, Nicotine-Plus, Amarok, Audacity, K3, Brasero, Rhythmbox, Banshee, gThumb Image Viewer, Sound Converter, F-Spot Photo Manager, are just some. There are many other sw, I can use if I please and all FREE....:)

Never bothered with WINE sw. Prefer to use regular Linux sw.

As you know Ubuntu comes pretty loaded with sw by default with thousands of other apps & programs there for use in Linux repositories all for FREE.

This is sad really.
Always thought Canadians more frugal with their money and less susceptible to marketing forces, as say you are.
Well this will probably all reverse when Windows 7 comes out in a couple months. Then there will be that nasty surprise many Mac folks get hit with when they see what will have to be done to update to upcoming Snow Leopard....
Yeah, Woodpeckr, what DJK said. With a Mac you are getting the ability to run BOTH platforms if you choose. You are also getting the best in PC industrial design and reliability.

There's a lot of Chrysler 300's out there, but I'm happy in my 5 series bimmer.

Like Canucklehead says and the point I am trying to make is that most of those if not all are available on the OS X platform...for FREE!!!

GIMP - yep, on OS X and there are Web-based alternatives such as Picnik.
Open Office - yep, on OS X or NeoOffice.
Pidgin - Adium on OS X is free.
Skype - yep, on OS X
Torrent SW - got lots of free ones on OS X
Nicotine+ - no idea but it looks like another p2p client
Amarok - yep, on OS X
Audacity - yep, on OS X
K3 - more downloading of files? ooooo...sure something similar will be on OS X
Brasero - burning CDs? do it all the time on OS X

And so on...

Do you get the point I am trying to make? You keep harping that everything is FREE on Linux but there are also Mac OS X equivalents that are FREE. So, your biggest argument for people having to futz around with Linux (yeah, we see those people trying out Linux having probs on this board) goes right out the window.

Why would anyone want to go through that sort of hassle in order to get free software when they can get free software if they paid a bit more for OS X?

It's NO REAL HASSLE at all for me.
For that matter people less knowledgeable about computers be they M$, Apple or Linux harp about 'hassles' because they don't know what they are doing! Once they learn the OS 'hassles' vanish......that is unless they are on the dense side!....

It's good to see Mac, LIKE Ubuntu, comes pretty fully loaded with plenty of SW. The only difference IS you paid a pretty penny for all that, while I got ALL THAT & MORE for free.

Oooo...I'm sure that those who had problems recently like being called "dense".

No, you did not get all that for free. You spent time learning all of that and the learning curve for Linux is a lot steeper than it is for OS X. Maybe your time is worth a big goose egg but others may not be in the same situation.

Pray tell what "MORE" did you get? As I've already pointed out, whatever you can get for free on Linux can probably be matched on the OS X side.

The other day I bought an lcd monitor. Looks great using XP and DVI. Doesn't work at all with Ubuntu 64 bit. Checked on the internet and that seems to be a common problem with Ubuntu. Something to keep in mind.

I really didn't do my research on this one. The controls for contrast, brightness, etc. don't work with Ubuntu either. Just Windows. Grrrrr! Oh well, it's back to Future Shop.

No big whup! You take it back and get another brand.
I took back an HP Quad Core desktop PC & 19" monitor because I wasn't happy with the crappy performance of the wireless keyboard & mouse HP was using then.

Well there are those that think they have to have M$ Office and refuse to use any other.
Then there's is M$ Streets & Trips with GPS Locator, that turns your PC into a GPS.

Not to mention the M$ Games.

Doubt Apple can match any of them for free....;)

The biggest thing that many people don't know, or it is rarely mentioned is that with a Mac, you can run everything. This includes Windows apps (games, and anything else out there) through either virtualization (ie. Parallels) or with Bootcamp. You can also run any Linux OS and app through virtualization software. In addition, you can run all of the Mac apps (access to the iLife and iWork suite is almost enough reason to get a Mac!) also. With virtualization, you can run them side by side to the Mac app in OSX. You also get the highest quality hardware, industrial design and CS support out of any computer maker.

Yes, Macs are not playing in the bottom of the barrel $500 laptop market, but this is because making cheap plasticky stuff is not in their DNA. The Macbook Pros are arguably the most beautiful, sleek as well as solid laptops in the market today, and will last you many years. Yes they cost more, but you never have to worry about viruses or defragging your HDD (unless you're running Windows on a partition), and once you hold one of these in your hands, you'll understand the value built into them.

The same analogy can be made in cars. You can buy a cheaply made car that will get you from point A to B. And you can also buy one that will take you there in comfort, ease of use, and reliably with less maintenance. Everyone has their budget, and if all you can afford to buy is the $500 plastic laptop, then this is what you will invest in.

There is a reason that Macs are continuing to grow in market penetration. More and more people are discovering their value and are willing to spend a little more for the quality experience, as well as the versatility provided (being able to run just about every app out there through either Bootcamp or virtualization). No other PC maker can offer the same capability or experience.

OK, tomorrow SN comes out. If I get a copy can I install it on my PC as a dual boot like a salesman told me a month ago at the Apple Store or was he wrong?
I can install any Windows OS or Linux distro, can I install SN off the install disc with no problem?
