Rachmaninov is a sexual composer there are others. The Prelude to Die Walkure popped into Wagner's head while he was screwing.

It seems that Yuja isn't happy with the tempo at about 1:40 and she's pushing the tempo, I think you can hear the conductor
telling the orchestra kick it up a notch.
I don't know whether he's calling for a change of tempo - there are other ways a conductor can ask for that, besides shouting.

But you can see that YW is taken aback, hearing him shout. How could she not be? The thing that amazes me is that she was able to carry on without missing a beat. Think how secure it must be - in her brain and in her fingers - for her to be able to rise above the conductor calling out!!

As to the Yuja Wang clip, struggles between conductors and soloists are more common than one is lead to believe. Usually the conductor the prevails...unless, of course, you're Glenn Gould.

Conductor's role in the performance of a concerto is to provide
accompaniment to the soloist. One criticism of Brahms' 1st piano
concerto when it was premiered was that the work came
across as a symphony with the piano soloist playing a secondary role
to the orchestra. That might explain why the concerto never gained
much popularity in the 19th century when virtuoisity of the soloist
was often the selling point of a concert.

I don't think the soloist has to be a big name to dominate a performance
or at least to be a equal partner to the orchestra. Obstinate conductors who
always tried to dominate the soloist in the performance of a concerto is
a rarity. I can only think of Toscanini, Karajan and perhaps Georg Solti as the
few prominent conductors who rarely demonstrated the kind of sensitivity
and restraint required of a good accompanist.

Very close to being the best but that may not last long. I suspect Hilary Hahn is going to want a kid soon.

Why is it that almost you only see Asians playing strings or piano? Are the other instruments not as important to them or is it a status symbol to them?

In Boston you may find your cab driver tuned to the classical
music station on his job. In Asia classical music is generally
not as 'grass-rooted' if thats the way to put it. I am of the
impression classical music is more genuinely appreciated among
the Japanese than other Asian people.
In other parts of Asia like HK, kids mostly from
the affluent middle class, are exposed to classical music
in the form of piano and violin lessons for the purpose
of special education to make them 'cultured'. Perhaps thats
what make you think playing the two instruments being
a status symbol to them.

Thank you oil&gas, you rise to the occasion yet again.

Don't know how to answer that question nor would I attempt to try. May I interest you in a Fagot Quartet?
