Same thing thats happening in N.O. can happen here folks.
No I dont mean a hurricane but we could have another major power failure like we had 2 years ago.
Only this time it may last a few days, which can bring total lawlessness in the GTA.
Riots, looting, shootings ...etc

Outnumbered cops wil be powerless to stop it.

Under the same cuircumstances our behaviour wouldn't differ. The exception being we have less gun's and less poverty. But given extreme conditions the majority of people are going to turn to the base of human nature...survival.

BS

Survival is one thing, uncivilised animals is another,,,,,,a disaster would only be an excuse for people to act out.
The people that are looting will all be caught, there is no way out for them, and when there is they may be suspect with a dozen or so shoes hanging from their bodies, like some sort of trophy. They in all probability had nothing before the storm, and even less now,we are all creatures of habit with most of us being followers. What we are seeing is desperate people being even more desperate.Sort of like a Rodney King, detroit riots (1967?),the melting pot politics of the USA,rolled into one big disaster.Bushy will drag his heals on this one,all the time maintaining they are doing their best.

Why is it when anything bad happens somewhere else someone on TERB starts a thread "It could happen to us!" ? Perhaps we should be grateful IT IS NOT happening to us instead of being curled up in a ball in the corner of our T-dot homes all paranoid n sh*t.

There's a wonderful quote I heard - something like "Human beings aren't nice, it's just that our society works better when we act that way." From that, I firmly believe that if there is a breakdown in social order, as in the case of New Orleans, then human beings will indeed show a very mean streak, whether it is in the gun-ridden war-mongering US, or the more relatively sedate and calm Great White North.

I think that it would take longer for Canucks to cross the line as there is more of a tendency to keep order. Look at the blackout; people getting out and directing trafic? How many stores were looted? When the rescue busses and helicopters came, I feel we'd more likely just stand in line and wait our turn, not rush the bus and shoot at rescuers. I am sure that there would be enough people who would be inclined to be f*cknuts but it would take a lot for there to be a critical mass of them.

I don't recall hearing about this sort of thing during the Eastern tsunami last year. It didn't happen in Prague, or any of the affected German cities a few years back when the extreme floods did pretty much the same thing there. And in the case of Prague, there are a lot of similarities to New Orleans(density, large poorer population and disparity of wealth, etc.).

And didn't looting happen in other (lesser?) disasters affecting Amercian cities, including the West coast quakes, or various power outages... let alone for contentious legal decisions?

I don't know much about humans (especially their propensity to hurt each other... I can only guess that's 'cause they don't have anyone above them on the "food chain" trying to eat them) or how exactly Canadians might behave if faced with the same situations, but I think there does seem to be a difference between American reaction to disaster and other places in the world, even if I can't figure out why....

...all I know is it's horribly sad to see, especially when it's interfering with efforts to help people who desperately need it. :(

I don't think Canadians have it in them to behave that way. Sure, there'd be some of that stuff going on, but I truly don't believe it'd be as bad as it is in N.O.

What is the one thing that all of those cities have in common?

Martial Law and a standing shoot to kill order, during a time of crisis?
