Anarchy in Toronto??

Escape from NY, LA

This whole New Orleans thing is reminding me of the movies Escape From New York and Escape from LA.

The entire city is abandoned and used as a prison. In the case of Escape from LA, the city is physically separated from the mainland by an earthquake.

I could imagine some bizarre sci-fi scenario where the government decides to abandon the city and close it off with huge walled barriers. Anyone left in the city will need to survive amongst the criminal gangs, who fight it out and rule the city amongst themselves.

After reading many of your comments toward this deplorable situation in N.O. I have to conclude several things.

1. We all have strong feelings about what's going on in N.O. Most, if not all, of us feel pity, sorrow and outrage at what's happened and still happening.

2. We all have differing views as to why the city has gone to anarchy.

3. Some of us are racist and don't realize it.

Gypsy, you are quite clearly one of the people in #3.
You are constantly saying black people attacking white people. How about the innocent black people who are being attacked? It never said anywhere that the victims were all white. Yet you choose to highlight the victims as white. There are news reports that show white people "searching" for food while they describe black people as "looting". Is this how you view the scenerio in N.O.?

The only reason why so many "black" people are causing the problems is because there are so many black people there. If that city was an all white city, it would most likely be the same scenerio. The sad part is, if that happened, the national guard would be there right away and that the "looting" would be considered "surviving".

Anarchy would be almost as strong in Toronto. I predict that there would be a race war. The people who hold your views would defend (read attack) those of color because they would feel threatened. Vice versa I'm sure.

The whole point is, that they aren't acting like animals because they are black. They are acting like animals because they are criminals. Criminals thrive on anarchy. Most likely the reason why they were taking pot shots at helicopters trying to land. These criminals want disorder so they can keep benefitting from the chaos. Stealing, raping, pillaging and generally intimidating anyone, black or white, to secure a foothold on authority where there is no lawful figures to desplay real authority.

Lets not give this racism anymore credo. The people there that are causing the problems (read raping, pillaging and unlawful activity) are criminals. Not black, not white, just criminals.

I forgot to add one point.
I own a store along with a couple of other things. Someone brought up the black out of last summer.
During that time, the small town in which my business sits, was not affected. I understand there were small pockets of towns in southern ontario that were not affected by the black out.
Anyways, when news broke that the power would be out for a day or so, people went berzerk. My gas station sold out of gas in less than a day.
I had my station refueled 3 times in 2 days. My usual refill cycle is once per week. People were screaming at my attendants to sell them premium fuel at regular prices. Something i would never authorize because simply I pay more for premium. I never raised my prices like other stations did and it paid off. My customers respected me for my decision and I gained many long term clients from that day.
My whole point in making this post is that chaos almost ensued and it was only a black out. I had patrons fighting over bags of ice. Other patrons reported to be fighting over who was next in line for gas. Customers pushing each other to get in line for sandwiches. I even had two grown men with small children beside them screaming and swearing over a bag of chips.
My store was wiped out in a day and a half. What I had left were canned goods that nobody wanted. All chips, bread, ice cream, pop, water, and any easily consumed food items were completely wiped out. What happened next is almost comical if not so frightening. I witnessed two women almost coming to blows, their husbands broke them apart but they were also cussing each other out, over 2 bags of ice. This was all because of a black out. No flooding, no plague, no buildings destroyed. And if you want to say "oh it's cuz of hicks", you're dead wrong. I had customers come from as far away as Burlington, London, Waterloo and Niagara Falls looking for gasoline and other items. It was a time of desperation and it got ugly fast. For my last point, none of those customers were black. They were all white with a small mix of asian. The asians were pushy but the white customers were the most violent. If there were more asians I'm sure there would have been more incidents of violence from asians. So the theory of relative calm with white folks, in a desperate situation is gone out the window. Just thought I'd add that little bit to absorb into all those people who think the cause of rash and violent behaviour has to do with the color of their skin.

T.O. the good

baltimoron beat me to the Escape from LA/NY reference. It was my initial fear when guns, no lights, corrupt LE, desperation.

Few U.S. cities riot over winning sporting events. People take advance of opportunities. Perhaps the pot shots were out of frustration, who would know for sure? But taking constant shots at pin-down cops were intentional.

In desperate time, people will resort to desperate measures. Unfortunately, shortage of gas, food, and life essential can bring that out in people.

Sure T.O. would be messy, but like to think not to same degree, as we tend to be gentler people. As others suggest, past experience, the black out, Quebec ice storms, Mid-west (Manitoba) flood, B.C. great forest fire, people pull together. Canadian are peaceful by nature, except for some rotten apples. We've fewer guns/person & few gun shops. Not as often we take advantage of each other in such situation, the case of the N.O. looters/rapist.

Our LE are not where near as corrupt, as the N.O. counterpart. N.O. LE worst rotten bunch in US.

Civil order may get out of hand but not same degree.

Unlike N.O., T.O. is Economic heart of Canada. If T.O. goes down, would impact the entire country, in extreme case Canada fall into depression. Remember how quickly the Army showed up when Mel request for assistance to remove snow.
