I have been aware of the information on the CDC website regarding the first diagnosed case of AIDS for years, Mr. acutus, and was first aware many years ago after reading the book, "And the Band Played On". Epidemics are like a fire, and in dealing with a retro virus like HIV developing into AIDS, a very slow burning fire. Tracing the source is not so simple as recognizing for the first time one day where the fire may have have shown up.

While I normally wouldn't enter any sort of discussion fueled by hellbent devil's advocacy, I do read through some of these threads. It is evident to me, Acutus, that you blindly accuse others of "conjecture". Somehow I doubt there are any geneticists or AIDS researchers in our midst here on terb, so we must rely on the published medical evidence to form our own layman opinions -- although there seem to be many variant takes on the origins of the disease. I had never read the posted hypothesis concerning SIV and African Pan Troglodytes, and I found it startling and fascinating.

But does it really matter which manner of transmission of AIDS is most prevalent -- even if you are correct (which it appears you are not) that homosexuality inherently causes aids (but, in your infinite wisdom, that heterosexual transmission of the virus is "beside the point")? Shortage of birth control in the developing world, sharing of needles in the drug underculture, and unprotected sex even in the West causes the spreading of AIDS....and the bottom line is that all inflicted with it will perish from this Earth after living through a precarious agony -- perhaps prolonged with protease inhibitors or other medications that may or may not ease their pain (or may magnify their suffering).

While "personal invective" in response to anyone may not be appropriate in most circumstances, it most certainly does apply to your despicable ignorance. You are an anonymous scourge, Acutus. People akin to your backward thinking deserve to be ignored. Focus your supposedly competent intellectual strengths in supporting agencies lobbying for a development of a cure to this ailment rather than pointing fingers. Tsk Tsk.....shame on you.

I do not 'blindly accuse others' of conjecture, Mr. Mrorange. I've looked at many, many of the several web sites devoted to espousing a point of view regarding the original cause/source of AIDS. What I found is that what these sites offer is not scientific fact but rather theory and hypothesis. Many of these same sites also state that the first known case of AIDS was discovered in Homosexual men in 1981 in New York City and or San Francisco(City)and that correlates with what the CDC(Center for Disease Control)also states as fact- not theory or hypothesis. Yes, it does matter to me and many other like minded people the manner in which the transmission of AIDS is most prevalent. That you and others here feel that personal insult is appropriate when discussing an issue with an individual who does not share your point of view reveals something important about the strength of your(and their)position. You, as are others here are welcome to ignore me, but you have chosen not to with your reply and instead have attempted to merely insult me.
