Never heard of Maple Leaf Stadium until now. Never would have imagined an baseball stadium at Bathurst and Lakeshore.
Which brings up Greenwood for horse racing.

That was the home of the Toronto Maple Leaf professional Triple A Baseball League Team. Greenwood Race Track was located on the corner of Queen and Woodbine Avenue home of live thoroughbred horse racing. Later became the Old Woodbine Racetrack which added Harness Horse Racing all run by the Ontario Jockey Club. They later closed the track and moved to the New Woodbine Race Track in rexdale. Also, across the street from Greenwood on the north side of Queen was a bar called the Orchard Park Tavern. It was noted for having a separate entrance for women only and had a special lounge room on the second floor for them. Toughest looking women I had ever seen. LOL.

I went to many games there as a kid with my dad. By the way prior to this stadium, there was a professional baseball park located on the Toronto Island on Hanlan's Point. This is the best trivia question in sports iIMHO. Where did Babe Ruth hit his first home run in professional baseball. Answer, against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Hanlans Point in 1914. He played for the Providence Grey's. Americans will never believe this.

What so many people don't know about Peter Munk. He was a brilliant idea man and a smoothe talker. He wanted to manufacture colour TVs and convinced the premier of Nova Scotia that if they built a plant there he would hire local people to work there in Stellerton Nova Scotia. Problem was fishermen weren't adept at electronics and the quality of the TVs were terrible. At the same time a partner from clairtone in the USA got huge contracts to sell to many of the largest retailers there, and at the same time Clairtone went public and shares opened at $2.00 per share. In 6 months they sold thousands of TVs to these stores. Shares went up to $15. as annual reports showed big profits. However, although sales were shown as final, they were in fact sold on consignment and because of the poor quality many were returned for credit. Company ended up going bankrupt but prior to that Munk and his Treasurer sold their shares. Munk made 8 million. The Ont. Security Commission charged him with insider trading but later dropped all charges. Bottom line Peter Munk was a crook. I know because at that time I was the Assistant Credit Manager. Sorry for the long rant.
One of my relatives was a Clairtone dealer. I don't know if he ever sold their TVs but he sold quite a few stereos, He had a customer who wanted a console stereo to match her dining table. He sent a leaf from the table to the factory and they matched the colour perfectly.
About 20 years or so ago I remember seeing some cheap electronic products advertised with the Clairtone name.

My dad thought that baseball was a stupid game. He'd never go.

They had a promo on Father's Day. Any kid coming in with his father would get a free bat, regulation size. So I went with a few friends, bought a ticket and then scoped out men walking in alone. We asked them to be our father as we walked through the turnstiles and then got our bats. LOL.

[/QUOTClairtone made to best stereo consoles. Some were designed in many futuristic styles, one had speakers attached resembling world globes. Too bad they decided to build colour TVs
