One of my friends asked me about democracy in US. They were confused why the guy who had fewer people vote for him got to be president this time. And why a few years ago the judges appointed by the administration ruled who would be president instead of recounting the votes.
Most importantly because the U.S.A. is a
federal union, hence it is states which matter in such things. We could go on from there but I'm not sure of the marginal utility of my doing so*.
*Such as the recount paid for by
the Washington Post and
the New York Times which showed that in the 2000 election in Florida in fact President Bush recieved the most votes.
Iraq actually. 2003. And as far as she was concerned it was simply an invasion and life went down hill for everyone there.
I can see her point. However, although I should know better. . . . .
Remember the repeated efforts of Saddam's Government to use SAMs to shoot down aircraft enforcing the Northern and Southern No Fly Zones.
Regarding the Second Gulf War, things were different the first few months after the occupation of Iraq then they were later.
Most of the problems were due to Civilian Leaders failing to pay attention to the Military. Indeed the force sent was more than adequate to defeat the Iraqi Military, however it was not sufficient to adequately occupy Iraq. That indeed was wrong and lives were lost due to it.
