I found out about this track and the contributions of Gil Scot Heron back in the late 1980's. As a teen I didn't truly understand the message. Even though they didn't sample GSH directly, Public Enemy helped in that regard. And I am proud to say that I own the very first hip hop record that sampled this song. None other than my man Schoolly D

The story behind the song...

"Don't Worry Baby" was composed by Brian Wilson at his home in Hawthorne, California. It was conceived as a response to "Be My Baby", a recent hit by the Ronettes that had amazed and inspired Wilson. In his 1991 memoir, Wouldn't It Be Nice: My Own Story, it is stated that Wilson adopted the song title phrase from his then-girlfriend Marilyn Rovell shortly after hearing "Be My Baby" for the first time. In a 2009 interview, he said that he composed "Don't Worry Baby" over the course of two days. "I started out with the verse idea and then wrote the chorus. It was a very simple and beautiful song. It’s a really heart and soul song, I really did feel that in my heart."

The memoir provides further details of the collaboration: "I called [my] lyricist Roger Christian and told him I had an idea. He met me one afternoon at my parents' house, where, in one of our last collaborations, we wrote a lush ballad whose title and chorus came directly from Marilyn's comforting words, 'Don't Worry, Baby.' I knew the song was a smash before we finished writing it." On another occasion, Wilson recalled, "I met [Roger] in the parking lot at KFWB and he presented the lyrics for me. I went home and wrote the song in about an hour-and-a-half."

Wilson considered having the song recorded by the Ronettes and their producer, Phil Spector, instead of the Beach Boys. In the memoir, it is stated that Wilson changed his mind after discussing the idea with Christian. However, Spector had a general policy against recording songs that he did not write. In 1994, Ronnie Spector recalled that she and Wilson had discussed "Don't Worry Baby" in 1963 on the only prior occasion they had met: "It was the follow-up to 'Be My Baby,' and [Brian] came running into Gold Star Studios and said, 'I wrote a great song for you!' But of course [Phil] didn't do the writing on it, so [we didn't record it]." She would eventually cover the song as a solo performer on the She Talks to Rainbows EP.

This came up in a conversation with a friend today. Always a good day for some Tupac.
Like Biggie a talent lost far too soon. Our introduction to 2Pac was on this song

But my favorite joint from him is this. From 1995's LP 'Me Against the World'

King Bee was a Dutch hip hop group fronted by rapper All Star Fresh. Best known for the song "Back By Dope Demand" in 1990 this was their follow up in 1991

"Must Bee the Music"

It was a sample of a group Secret Weapon from the early 80's

"Must Be the Music"

It should also be noted that King Bee sounds eerily similar to a Philadelphia 80's hip hop group called Tuff Crew.

From Karyn White's second album 'Ritual of Love' released in 1991. Her first album was almost entirely produced by Babyface and L.A. Reid. For her second album she brought in super producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to handle most of the production. Except for this song which was produced by Zachary Harmon and Christopher Troy. This hit #5 on the R&B charts and #12 on the Hot 100.

1984 saw the first R&B/rap collaboration with Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" feat. Melle Mel with the rap. Fast forward 5 years to get the next collab. At a time when r&b and rap/hip hop were starting to gel to form a new genre called New Jack Swing.

Tell me mumble is better than this, I dare you. 😂
LL Cool J's "Boomin' System" sampled at the beginning. Marley Marl made that beat as well as this one. I still have this CD. "Funky Child" is one of my favorite hip hop jams. Great boom bap.

I own both Digable Planets albums, they are immaculate. This is up there with my favorite songs by them. The live instrumentation take is pretty dope.
