Let the Rhythm Hit Em is the third studio LP from Eric B. and Rakim. It was released in 1990. The duo would go on to release one more album in 1992 before splitting up. Eric B. was the DJ/producer and Rakim was the MC/producer. Many, including myself, regard Rakim as being the GOAT. I listened to this album in full yesterday for the first time in quite a while. For some reason I forgot just how dope it really was. It doesn't get the fanfare that it should, despite being a certified 🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤album by The Source.
The title track is one of their best songs but some hidden gems on this album I've included here

Keep Em Eager to Listen

Set Em Straight

No Omega

Aged like a fine 🍷

A Tribe Called Quest can arguably be called the best hip hop group of all time. The Low End Theory (1991) is widely regarded as their seminal album release. I love how they incorporated jazz instrumentals in the production. This track is a beautiful example of it

Sort of in the same mold as The Emotions, The Jones Girls (3 sisters) were a vocal trio from Detroit who hit success when they signed with Philadelphia International Records in 1978 . They didn't get the flowers they should have. In my opinion these are there three best songs:

Nights Over Egypt (1981)

You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else (1979)

Dance Turned Into a Romance (1980)

Another group signed to Philadelphia International Records. Gamble, Huff and Bell sure had a knack for finding talent. And I thank them immensely for the listening pleasure they have given to me.

Everyone knows 'Shotgun' but this is just as fine a tune in my opinion. Damn I love the sound of the saxophone. And Junior Walker was definitely one of the best. How he was able to play the sax and do the lead vocals is truly mind boggling.

From the same album as 'Let Your Backbone Slide', more Toronto rapper Maestro Fresh Wes. The "drop the needle' vocal is sampled from Canadian rock bank Haywire's song 'Dance Desire'.

I've heard this one before but not the Ann Sexton tune you posted prior. I prefer more upbeat tempos but these are nice to hear if in the right mood. Very soulful.

How did I not know that this timeless classic was produced by Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards? Not that I'm overly surprised they were producing heat all over the place during that era.

First time I ever heard this song was on a disco music 8 track. Forgot how much of a jam this was. Damn that guitar is mesmerizing.

From their self titled debut album in 1991. One of the first CD's I ever bought. Still own it today.

"Never knew my dad mutherfuck the fag" Sadly a line that is relevant to many young black boys/men.
