That leaves Demott as the "Last of the Mohicans". What's taking so long?
What does it matter?
And, the Maple Leafs have 2 R.F.A.'s remaining, not one.
Start of season is 2.5-3.5 months away.
Dermott's arbitration hearing isn't for a while yet.

Does anybody know what the plans for Lehtonen are?
I hear how good he is but his name doesn't come up much in terms of where he fits in.

Jesper Lindgren was also suppose to be an up and comer and now he is gone.

"Jesper Lindgren, from HPK Hameelinna of the Swedish Hockey League."

Getting back to Demott,
"Dubas will now turn to the remaining two restricted free agents left that need new contracts; defenceman Travis Dermott, and winger prospect Joey Anderson who was acquired from the Devils as a oart of the return for Andreas Johnsson. I wouldn’t be surprised if one or both contracts are announced today. Dubas doesn’t have much room under the salary cap left so these contracts are essentially fait accompli."

Looks like signing Dermott is a priory for Dubas now and not 2-3 months from now. Don't know much about Joey Anderson.

Which indicates to me that Dermott has slipped on their depth chart.

Getting back to Lehtonen, he's been one of the top D, if not the top D in the KHL, Lindgren hasn't proved nearly as much.

Could be. I think the plan is to bring Sandin up to the Leafs, so maybe Dermott is dispensable. Or maybe, Dubas is fed up with being accused of overpaying his players and eating up cap space needlessly. Who the heck knows with the Leafs.

In related news, the other RFA is Joey Anderson.

Have the Leafs signed any of their 2020 draft picks yet?

Whether I agree or disagree with Dubas, I do believe he's a very calculating guy.

Geez, the clock is ticking.

Toronto only has about 44* months left to sign those players.

Wondering if Dermott still has shoulder issues that are a fly in the ointment at the negotiating table? He was not the same when he came back this season, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear he played a lot if not all of the season nursing a poorly healed shoulder.
One year at $875,000. Not a lot for an RFA.

RFA Joey Anderson is stll unsigned.

Ha, ha, I actually saw Thornton interviewed on TV a couple of days ago. The beard is gone (at least for now).

With all the recent activities (trades, UFA and RFA signings, draft, departures, etc.), I think we have a good idea of what the 2020-21 Leaf team will look like. The next two months will likely be a fairly quiet period.

I'm only focusing on one hockey thread so I don't know what is happening in other threads.

Dubas signed Anderson and Hutchinson for just slightly more than league minimum as he did with Thornton and Dermott.

I think these are good signings...Joe Thornton is not going to have 70 points or anything like that but he’s well respected, his teammates are going to love him and fans will too.

With Joey A. now signed to three years extension, w first two years two-way in nature, no one should expect to see to much of him up with the big club for a couple of seasons barring significant injuries. Could be a good add to the Marlies though..

Question: Will Robertson and Sandin mak the big club?

I think they will...tougher for Robertson with the veterans they signed.

Expected Leafs lines for tonight's opener and overall roster as follows:

L1: Matthews, Marner and Thornton
L2: Vesey, Tavares, Nylander
L3: Mikheyev, Kerfoot, Hyman
L4: Barabanov, Spezza, Simmonds

D1: Reilly, Brodie
D2: Muzzin, Holl
D3: Dermott, Bogosian
7th D: Lehtonen

G: Andersen, Campbell

Taxi Squad: F: Robertson, Boyd, Brooks... D: Sandin...G: Dell

This is the team's 21 man roster for this season, which leaves them about $615K under the cap.

Surprised to see Hyman drop off the first line, and to see Robertson on the taxi squad to start. Also wondering how Lehtonen wound up as the 7th D...would expect him to start logging bigger minutes sooner rather than later. Even so, roster looks like enough to take out the Habs tonight, unless Price gets hot.

I don't see Thornton lasting on Matthew's line, Hyman is a match made in heaven for that line.
I think the first ten games are on an on trial basis, lots of new faces, this season is like a tournament almost.
Just make the playoffs but go in peaking.
Marner sets up Matthews, Tavares sets up Nylander, good changes, I've been pushing this for last few years.
I think Nylander will have a good year with this set up.

I think you're absolutely right mellow. Thornton has size, but really looked slow in the first game. Don't know if he'd be able to keep up with the pace expected from the first line. Hyman seems to always have energy to burn, especially when chasing down the puck in the corners to get it to the other two.

Nylander potted a couple in a fairly strong showing too, but he had some breaks that helped a bit...i.e. first goal, the MTL D-man had lost his stick and backed into Price screening him. They all count though, so hopefully his luck will hold out over the 50+ games season.

I was more impressed with his play setting up Vesey for the goal.
Went in for the forecheck, forced the turnover and made a nice pass. Keefe is bringing out something more from him than Babcock could.
It's a nice improvement, I've always been really critical of him, but only because he's so loaded with talent and wasn't giving everything he could for the team.
