I assume if things go badly, the Sabres can get rid of Hall the same way the Oilers and the Devils got rid of him. Then he'll be an UFA again after one season.
The Buffalo club will just ignore the NTC/NMC in his contract?

Well, the owners are tRUMPies, so, contracts and legalities mean little to nothing to them.
Possible, I suppose.

Wow! Wonders never cease. A NT/NM in a one year contract. Maybe that is why the Sabres only offered him a one year contract? Or, maybe Taylor figure he will have a fantastic year and become an UFA again and then sign a fat long term contract.

"Taylor Hall threw a curveball at everybody. The free agent winger stunned the NHL on Sunday night by agreeing to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Buffalo Sabres. The contract also reportedly has a no-trade and no-movement clause.16 hours ago"

Now that the Blues have locked up Torey Krug, the word on the street is that the Blues will not try too hard to re-sign Pietrangelo. Wonder where he will end up?

Also, what is happening with RFA Dermott?

not always sure...

It's uncommon having no move/no trade in a one year contract, but Hall's agent probably felt it was a good idea after watching the way The Sabres managed the Zach Bogosian situation last February, when they tried to assign him to the AHL before suspending him and terminating his contract.

Hall might mesh well with Jack Eichel though, this could work out well.

Thanks for the historical perspective.

I am kind of interested because Buffalo might be a Leaf playoff competitor (wildcard).

Bogosian looked good on a team loaded with good players. Remains to be seen how glaringly his weaknesses shine through on this team. On a team like the Leafs, there is no where to hide. Hoping the role they ask him to play is in line with what he can still offer at this stage of his career. Asking more than he can give is a recipe for disaster. Jimmy V. might also be a good addition if he can rekindle some of the flash he once exhibited.

I‘m going out on a limb to predict Simmonds will be the come back player of the year. It’s wishful thinking but if he does become that, that may also mean the Leafs finish better than how they did last few years.

At his salary above all the other 1 million and below players anything other than the 3rd line will be a disappointment. They're not paying him to play 4th line. He should get 2nd unit PP time with Spezza and perhaps Brodie.

Pietrangelo to Vegas. 7 years for $61.6mm.

Why is Dermott taking so long?

Just for the fun of it, would you trade Rielly and Nylander for Pietrangelo, Hall and at least 2 first round picks + prospects ? Would it make the Leafs a better team ?

You sign Pietrangelo and Hall as free agents and you can get a boat load of picks and prospects by trading Nylander and Rielly. There’s about 3 millions in their combined salaries for the next couple of years until Morgan is due for a raise; with the huge return you‘d be getting and from past experience you can get a few millions relief in cap by trading just one first round pick.

Trading Rielly would leave the Leafs without their best offensive defensman by far.

I think Hall is past his best before date. If I remember correctly his MVP year was an anomaly because he never scored more than 27 goals before or since plus he was injured last year and/or the year before.

love this pick up. Big fan of Simomonds. I also like the resigning of Spezza.

But is Pietrangelo better than Rielly offensively?
Morgan Rielly - 517 games played - 54 goals 216 Assists = 270 points = .52 per game

Pietrangelo. - 758 games played - 109 goals 341 Assists = 450 points = .59 per game

Also keep in mind that it wouldn’t be a straight up trade. We’d give up 4 years of Rielly’s younger age and pick up 3-4 millions in salaries, but the return for Rielly and Nylander would be humongous.

Interesting stats. I guess I'm so used to Rielly being the Leaf's best offensive defenseman and playing with Toronto's "high octane" offense I thought his stats would be better.

Here are their last 3 years stats,
Rielly --- 29 122 151
Pietrangelo --- 44 103 147

I wonder what this means for Rielly when he becomes UFA next year? Maybe $6-$7mm annually (Torey Krug money)? Of course, one never knows with Dubas (other than he is constrained by the cap) .

BTW: Pietrangelo is also a right shooting defenseman. I assume the Leafs were not a serious bidder for him due to mismanaging the cap limit. (So, Holl is still the only right shooting Leaf defenseman.)

I'm checking into it, but I'm pretty sure every general manager in the NHL is constrained by the cap.

As I write this post, 6 teams are over the Upper Cap Limit.

Included on the list are:

Arizona
St. Louis
Vegas
Anaheim
Montreal
Washington

The closest team under, but nudging up against the Upper Limit?

That would be the Winnipeg Jets
