Constructive comments to date but not solutions:

Increased police presence - geographic(?)
Parental accountability
Reduction of poverty
Stonger legislation
Education emphasis
Employment

These are not new suggestions. How can they be made actionable and effective. What is the process, what is the timeline and what are the expectations?

What other ideas are there?

A more strict law regarding violence would work too.
Ya fuckin' think?

Sorry Thousand, this isn't directed at you, but I've had it to fuckin' here with this senseless violence and do-nothing, candy-ass politicians who think the answer is to build another fuckin' playground. Maybe some of those m-#$@%$-in', c-#%%#-in' political asswipes should do some hard time themselves. I don't lose control on here very often, but I've boiled over at this one.

The United States had the highest incarceration rate of citizens in the world. It's also the most violent nation in the western world.

Stricter jail terms may make you feel better, but it does nothing to prevent violence.

As an interesting side note, from the Toronto Star:

There have been 78 murders in Toronto this year, including a record 52 by gunfire. The city set a record for murders in 1991, with 88.

So violent crime isn't at an all-time high.

I agree that stricter jail terms won't help. I think better gun control could help though. I'm not talking about hunting rifles. The guns that need to be controlled are the weapons used to commit crimes. Depending on which LE agency you talk to between 50 to 70 percent of guns seized by LE in crime raids are from the U.S. It's time to tighten up the border.

I agree with your earlier post on policing Keeb, but the cops will tell you that their biggest source of frustration is putting the bad guys away and then watching them released in no time flat. I think heavy policing and some politicians with some backbone are necessary...

No need to worry -- the Liberals are promising a severe crackdown on handguns. Yesiree Bob, that'll solve everything.

Honest, guys, I only use sarcasm when I'm so white-hot angry that I can't think of any intelligent diologue...

Cops should be able to spot check people for weapons on young street, eaton center, housing projects, etc., and should do regular swoops through. Getting caught with one ought to be a 10 year jail sentence. Weapons searches should also go along with any traffic violation, etc.

Profiling would help. We could avoid racial profiling and just say the cops should target people dressed like gangsters. I realize most of them are just ordinary kids who are into rap, but really, that'd clean it up.

Violent crime is not on the rise, but if we don't put a stop to this gun fighting in our city streets, it is going to get a lot worse. Young people who want to fight need to go back to fists, or maybe knives. A knife fite is less likely to take down an innocent 19 year old girl who is out shopping.

Stricker jail time? How about SOME jail time for your crime......

How about NO jail time for murder? I'm talking about crimes when there are eye witnesses and or video. Lock em up, make sure everyone is telling the truth and in the cases where you are caught red handed with the gun in your hand, EXECUTE. EOS. It may not prevent crime but we will have one less gang banger on our hands.

New Gun Law, pretty simple:

If you are caught in the possession of, or there is one present in your house, finger print it, whoever last touched it GOES AWAY...PERMANANTLY.

Sorry for all the folks that get stopped unnecessarily (A close friend of mine is black, though I often forget that he is...REALLY) just because they are driving a nice vehicle, but I say expand the police force's ability to stop people who fit the description of a gang banger. If they are innocent, have no weapans, they go on their way. If they are caught with a hand gun, or other weapan, THEY ARE GONE. eos.

The government is currently (yeah currently) looking at barring any high school drop out from getting a licence. YEAH.....If a punker has something like that hanging over his head, he or she might think twice about dropping out.

Post annoucements in all schools on all doors:

If you are caught committing a violent crime, the sentence will be to have the same crime committed to the offender. ie: If you beat the crap outta someone, ditto, if you shoot someone, ditto...if you kill someone? DITTO.

YOU have a chance at free education, if you do not want to slave over a menial job all your life, LEARN A SKILL NOW.

Drum this into the heads of all the students.

In addition, make it mandatory for at least ONE parent attend a 2 hour seminar to be conducted at the school. In this seminar the subject will be responsibility and the fact that if their child commits a crime, the child AND the parent will do the time......See how many parents sit up and take notice of THAT.

So tboy and rusty, your solution is basically "get a life"?

Problem solved, "stop being a jack ass"?

"Grow Up", there we have no more issues!

"Study hard, stay in skool, don't be no fool." Mista T says be kewl.

Gentlemen, please try to offer a solution or the building blocks towards a solution. You are both bright enough and this board large enough that a reasonable, multi faceted, actionable plan could be developed.
The plan can be developed but what tboy was getting at was, these (gun toting) idiots who are given the plan have to follow through with the actions.
Sorta like the map of how to get to poing B from point A.
There's only so much that can be done for a person, the rest is up to him/her.

Oh profiling is BAD, bad bad bad bad...BAD. You don't want to offend the innocent gangstas out there do you? Sheesh......

When I was a teenager if a crime was committed the announcement over the police radios would be something like this:

Wanted for armed robbery of the variety store at yonge and eglinton: a caucasian male, 18 - 25 years old, last seen wearing black leather jacket, white t shirt and faded jeans, weight about 195 lbs and 5 foot tall.

NOw in the politically correct world it goes something like this:
Wanted for armed robbery of the variety store at yonge and eglinton: a person
(can't sale male, that is sexist!)
(can't say their age, that is prejudicial against teens and 20 somethings)
last seen wearing black leather jacket, white t shirt and faded jeans,
Can't say their weight, that might make them feel too thin or overweight and we know they can't control it)
(can't say anything about their height because, hell, if they are too tall, they get teased enuff about it and if they are too short, well, the same goes....)

You know, if the perp is black, looks like a gangsta, STOP every black THAT LOOK LIKE GANGSTAS.. Moral of the story? If you don't want to be treated like a gangsta, DON'T LOOK LIKE ONE!

BTW: I grew up in a rough neighbourhood (Weston road south of eglinton) and when I was out cruising at midnight I'd get stopped by the cops all the time. Was it a pain in the ass? Of course....Did I die? NO......

yep, it sucks, and it's absolute bullshit. But the stupid race factor comes into play I guess.
If it was a black male, then it's a black male. If it was a white male, then it was a white male.
I don't give a shit about colour, I give a shit about the crime and someone paying for it.
PC'ness is starting to piss me right the fuck off.

I'd say the whole "gangsta" culture is to blame as well. Impressionable young minds look to Tupac and 50 Cent as role models and heroes. The lifestyle that they portray, complete with violence, drugs et. al. is synonomous with the dregs of society. I abhor it.
Why don't you lump in the Sopranos, Godfather, Goodfellas as well?

It's obvious there's a HUGE problem in the black community and it needs to be fixed--even if large elements of the black community itself won't admit it.
The Black community has been admitting for years there is a problem. Its the government and elected officials who won't listen to the pleas.
The Bandit said:
And....the thing about young blacks not being given the oppurtunity, that's a bunch of crap...go out and prove yourself like alot of others have. Go out and look for the opportunity, don't wait for it to be given to you.
You don't have to be given an opportunity, but its sure nice to get one now and then. Let's face it, everybody got a start somewhere. You yourself got one probably. Why should things be any different for these kids? This is a community issue. The black kid you don't employ one day (because maybe you were a secret white supremacist and biased...who knows?) then goes back into the community and turns towards guns and violence. Then he ends up shooting off this gun and somebody you know gets it in the noodle. Oops, did I possibly have something to do with this....who knows??

As for oppurtunities for the "poor and disenfrachised"...they had/have the same oppurtunities that I did.....free education, access to more technology than I did, more access to information than I did.....using family wealth as an excuse is just plain old bullshit.....If your family is poor, you try harder at school, get a scholarship, or just plain WORK hard, you don't need a million dollars to be a good citizen....you just need personal honor and integrity...
I'd like to see you concentrate on education without a proper breakfast, clothing, notebooks, binders, etc. Are you a total retard or just like acting like one? This makes me laugh. Honor and integrity don't pay the bills.

Correct me if I'm wrong but alot of Mafioso types wear pinstripe suits in the movies..right? So you gonna stop me if I'm "black" and wearing a pinstripe suit?? I'd be pretty pissed. I knew you would say that Playa, but that's not the gangsta I'm talking bout. I mean the ones with the doo rag and bean cap. So who are you gonna stop again?? I'm confused?

As for new gun laws, why the hell does the government regulate an industry based on death instead of banning it? These companies go unpunished for making money off death. Fuck the recreational shooters, fuck the collectors, fuck the hunters. If you are not in the military or police, why do you need a gun?? I'll tell you what the root of all this is... GREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A bunch of points

1) I am around the corner and had just walked home minutes after the shooting. I noticed the blinkers up ahead but thought nothing of it. I tried to order a pizza from pizza pizza and was told there was a problem with the chain closest to me. Wasn't till I turned on cp24 that I found out what happened. Damn I'm glad I started and bloor and worked south instead of vice versa otherwise who knows what could have happended.

2) But has anyone stopped to praise all the single parents with low income and low education that have worked hard and raised kids who are not criminals. I mean we are looking at what 70 shootings this year.... give or take.... sorry I'm not keeping track. Now compare that to the number of kids that didn't shoot anybody.

3) As for surviving with 1 income vs two. No its not easy but it can be done.

just to play devils advocate, would you participate in these spot checks? would you allow cops in your building/subdivision/housing project/apt/condo and have a quick look and see? would you allow a quick anal prob you know just to check for crack, i mean you've got nothing to hide right?

what about people who look mafioso? i mean you don't wan to be treated like a mafioso type stop wearing some ridiculous hugo boss clothing right? gangsta types stop wearing your bling or you will be targeted, mafia types stop wearing pinky rings. or italian gumba gangsters exempt from the profiling of gangsters?

male middle aged and white upper midle class to high class, fits the profile of someone usually guilty of tax fraud, insider trading, false accounting, and other types of corp crime. should we profile all white middle aged wealthy males? no because like you said that would imply race. so move to clothing, anyone wearing a ridiculously expensive suit or driving a ridiculously expensive car should be targeted and audited.

just trying to draw paralles. we all know it's much easier to target gangsta types, and it is this group that we have created in our minds and thru the media that commit the crimes that we are insensed about. just trying to point out the problems and hypocracy involved in some of the talk about the slippery slope of reducing civil rights.

Innocent girl is dead, totally shocked, I was at HMW at Yonge and Dundas buying Cd's at the Boxing day sale finished right around 5pm and then right back into the Eaton Centre. Unaware what happened till I read this thread.
I hope the Feds will build a super prison up on some Arctic island with nothing to eat but Seal blubber that will hopefully act as a deterrent to those sun loving Jamaican gang bangers. This news makes we sick!!!
How long will this GO ON!!!

Apparently it was 2 rival gang(members) that decided to just start shooting at each other. Some were in a BMW and the others were walking on Yonge St.

They werent very good shots cause they missed everyone except boxing day shoppers.

Good news is that they may have caught some of the guys
