Yes, at 7, 8, 9 years old its the CHILDREN who are being embarrassed. And by 15, those pre-puberty superstars are 99% out of hockey.
Here's a safety-focused decision from a coach I mentor: This weekend a U15 team drove an hour to play a game that started at 9 pm. The game was delayed 45 minutes due to poor ice conditions, then cancelled. A frustrated 14 year old wrote an email to the hosting-association's president. No swears, no mean language, just "I'm upset that the game was cancelled when the ice looked fine to me, you should have some rules about it."
The President of that association read the email from the 14 year old, and had him suspended indefinitely pending hearing with OMHA, which ends his season. This decision was upheld by both the local association and the regional director.
So: slash to the head: 1 game. Death threats in the group chat: "We'll investigate after the season ends". Email from a child to an adult: Indefinite suspension.
Tell me again how we are doing the best for kids?
You may be in the very best association in the province, but your experience is far from typical. My advice to you is this: At some point, someone will do something inappropriate to your kid. When that happens, protect your kid yourself, because "hockey" won't do it.
