I didn't get a chance to watch the game in full, commitments that couldn't be cancelled. By the time I got home there was five minutes left in the third. Will stream in it's entirety today.

I've been saying Gretzky is a sleazeball for awhile. His celebration was muted due to his friendship with Orange Pus Boil. Trump wants him to be Governor of Canada.

Avid hockey fan Chuck, wore his American jersey. No ra ra from him, he's not going to put his invitation to Joe Carter's golf tournament at risk.

Are there any videos of Gretzky celebrating Canada's win? Other than 2002 Salt Lake City.

So Canadian Hockey is dead because of it's past and current legal problems? If that's the case than the NBA, NFL and MLB are all dead by your standards...
Canadian hockey is dead because:

Enrollment is down. The US now has more players enrolled under age 18 than Canada does. This in new in the last 2 years.

Our minor hockey programming sucks: we divide kids too soon (fuck every u13 and lower AAA team, and every u10 and lower "competitive" team). This drives costs up too early, and takes focus away from kids who develop later.

Our coaching development sucks: Take a weekend course, then we never follow up with you. The average AAA team is coached by the richest dad, and the dad who played 1 season of JR C. Kids don't get skill development they need.

We do not provide a safe environment for kids to play. There is no accountability for abusive behavior, this drives kids out of the sport.

So, between cost, abuse, and lack of value, families are spending their dollars elswhere. This trend will continue and accelerate.

No. Probably not even top 5.
How could I forget the 72 Summit Series! I was living outside the country and that might be the reason why the impact didn’t hit me quite as hard as this 4 nation tournament.

I‘d put this win right behind because similar to the Summit Series, there is a threat of war. Cold War back then and Tariff War now. There were a lot of fear of the Soviet nuclear might but I don’t think as a nation we hated the Russians as much as we hate the Americans now.
The Tariff War could potentially knock our economy down the toilet and affect the lives of millions of Canadians. On top of that there’s the hate onTrump, the worst dictator North America has known in our life time.

On the hockey side of things, the Americans were trying to bully us just like Trump is doing to us. They were well on their way to take hockey supremacy from us just as the Russians were in 1972. This win reaffirmed who’s the best, at least until the next time we meet.

Winning an Olympic Gold was huge but you have that chance every four years. With the preamble of my question “all things considered “, I’d put this win right after the 72 win.

They divide the kids up so the better kids aren't skating circles and embarrassing the average kids.

Maybe the coaching sucks in the organization you're part of but the one in my local area has former pros/OHL/NCAA players coaching the teams, they have a lot to offer.

There are lots of programs to provide safe environment for kids to play, it is addressed all the time and when a concern for an individual not having the best intentions for a kid comes up it is dealt with.

But, you seem to have such an axe to grind I don't think you'd ever be satisfied...I wouldn't want you near youth hockey because you'd be such a drag complaining all the time.

No. 5 should be Bobby Orr goal against the Czechoslovakia in the 1976 Canada Cup. It was his last hurrah.

Bobby Orr didn't take part in the Summit Series in 1972, he was recovering from knee surgery.
The 76 CC team might be the best Team Canada.

Also, it's too expensive for the average canadian kid to play Hockey anymore. Paying for ice time, equipment, league registration etc etc, is too much for the average canadian family too afford!!
It is expensive to play...equipment, ice time, team and league fees...you go head to toe they have costly equipment covering their body, compare that to what they wear in soccer and baseball...

My neighbour is 16 and he has a $400 hockey stick and he's a shit player...I didn't touch on costs during this debate because I agree, costs are driving people out.

You make a very good argument here to place this win right after the ‘72 win. The current animosity between Canada and US has never been witnessed in my lifetime (65 yrs). Similar to 1972, outright war is improbable, but these games (72 and now) have made a significant historical statement.

Yes, at 7, 8, 9 years old its the CHILDREN who are being embarrassed. And by 15, those pre-puberty superstars are 99% out of hockey.

Here's a safety-focused decision from a coach I mentor: This weekend a U15 team drove an hour to play a game that started at 9 pm. The game was delayed 45 minutes due to poor ice conditions, then cancelled. A frustrated 14 year old wrote an email to the hosting-association's president. No swears, no mean language, just "I'm upset that the game was cancelled when the ice looked fine to me, you should have some rules about it."

The President of that association read the email from the 14 year old, and had him suspended indefinitely pending hearing with OMHA, which ends his season. This decision was upheld by both the local association and the regional director.

So: slash to the head: 1 game. Death threats in the group chat: "We'll investigate after the season ends". Email from a child to an adult: Indefinite suspension.

Tell me again how we are doing the best for kids?

You may be in the very best association in the province, but your experience is far from typical. My advice to you is this: At some point, someone will do something inappropriate to your kid. When that happens, protect your kid yourself, because "hockey" won't do it.

Never heard that story, don't know what association was involved...don't even know if it happened.

I'm sure you are leaving out some details...I'm sure the association would tell a different story.

Agree that that was a totally unfair ruling in terms of the context you provided. The president is a snowflake.

However, a single anecdotal incident can not necessarily be extrapolated by outsiders like us to assume that this kind of behaviour is systemic.

I've put 5 or 6 current or very recent examples in this thread. And those are just the ones that make the news.

The entire board of Hockey Canada stepped down in 2022, because it systemically covered up abuse. I can't pretend that everyone's tolerance for abuse is the same, but after 10+ years in the system, mine has been exceeded.
