Either you haven't been to one yet, or you're just being ignorant.

And besides getting shot, if you also like being groped by throngs of men, I can't see why you should avoid Caribana.
Ok I thought by putting up a thread about this weekend would be interesting to see what type of replies there would be, and I was hopeing for good ones. . By the looks of it, there are allot of people with huge hate or ignorant remarks. What the hell. Does all black people carry guns?. What about you the white , Latin, Chinese, and Italian community? Why take yourself out of the equations. What the fuck is matter with you guys. I only see Nicole B standing up and making comments

It is supposed to be a good weekend for fun. It sucks that some of you have this shit put in you're head that all black people are bad and they walk around guns. Yeah allot of the black community has a bad wrap, but there are allot of those same people in the community is trying and doing their best to change it and they don't live in the run down homes. What is that another misconception.

LOL I grew up in a hick ass town for allot of my life, I had to put up with shit. But you know what. That shit made me stronger and push me to where I am today. Owning a very very good business that requires my experience and my staff in the very big software and IT industry. I really didn't think buy posting this on terb would get this sort of remarks, but what can I do. It is up to you to stay away if you want. Stay home if you wish. I really don't give a crap. Enjoy you're weekend.

Shootings can happen anywhere in Toronto, like what happened on monday night. 6 separate shootings in over two hours.

I think it's a great festival since it brings lotsa money into the downtown hotels and nightclubs.

But yes please stay home if you are so paranoid of getting shot down, and try not to ruin the fun for people just out to party.
Thanks for posting this.

.
There is a article in The Sun toady about this. There was a home robbery that occurred. They have arrested the culprits that did this and they believe that the over 24 guns that they stole had a major role in all of these shootings. Guess what they weren't from black decent. They police estimated that the values of the guns that were takeing were worth about $2500.00 street value.

I went once. A guy was shot execution style half a block away. All I remember is a mass swarm of people running away in a panic. You can guess that I've never been back to the celebrations. I usually stay far away.

I love Caribana. I check it out every year. It's a great party and I love all the eye candy up and down Yonge Street.

But let's face facts here. There is always some volence and shooting every year at Caribana that doesn't happen at these other big parades and that aspect of the weekend sickens me. We get a lot of unsavory people from down south who come up and use the festival as a place to take on personal feuds and such. It used to not be like this way back. It was all good and all fun. But now... I have to admit that there are some serious problems with Caribana. We supporters have to admit it also. Instead of getting upset at the people who diss Caribana, we should get mad that sometimes a little of what they say is true (the gun violence, etc).

I have to agree with Nicole. This thread has become nothing more than a rascist attack on black people. It's unbelievable how ignorant some of the comments are.

The mods should severly edit or delete the entire thread for promoting racism.

MODS, PLZ DO NOT EDIT ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD!! THIS IS A FAIR AND OPEN DISCUSSION. I DON'T FIND IT OFFENSIVE! Its actually a great source to find all the bigots!

I'm so shocked at the ignorance of posts in this thread!

Here is some general information for all you bigots.

1. Caribana is the #1 money maker event in Toronto. So maybe there should be a little respect for the people who bring in millions to this city every year . . . $400 million in revenue, to be exact!!

2. In the 38 years of Caribana, there have only been 2 years in which shootings which have taken place, at the annual parade. It is very safe!!

The violence to which you are all referring, takes place mainly on Yonge St., either Friday or Saturday night when the street is swarmed by underage children who are denied access into the clubs and bars. Drunk kids, raging hormones, and pack mentality . . . . . kind of reminds me of police brutality w/o the alcohol ( http://www.canada.com/national/nati....html?id=e289d91e-211c-4d50-9fdd-f669b820c8f7 ). . . . :D

I can not deny that there is definetly a problem with young black men and guns. However, labelling a completely fun, beautiful, and entertaining festival with that same stigma is very immature and ignorant.

I've been attending Caribana for over 15 years since the days of University St. And every year I have a great time. I've never been shot!!! I've never been groped!! And every year, I return!

Funny how people can be afraid for their life to go to Caribana, yet, throughout the year, those same people risk their life and put their fate in a condom!

I check it out for a few hours each year and always run into the friendliest people who know how to party in the street. :D
Toronto has loosened up a bit because of events like this.
As far as violence, sure it has increased - it sickens the blacks as well. It's still a very small part of the festival which tends to get the headlines.

Caribana Facts!

I've been every year since I moved here in the early nineties. The actual festival and parade are great fun and safe. Its the recent gangster take over of Young St at night that causes all the bad publicity. The take over gangster drive of Young isn't even part of the festival it just happens and ruins a great time.

Go to the festival ... stay away from downtown at night.

I don't see the biggotry in the comments so far. What you have is comments that you don't like aimed at the black community.

It's politically incorrect to say it, but the fact of the matter is that a very small percentage of the population is committing a disproportionate percentage of all of the crime.

No-one is saying that all blacks are criminals. Not by any stretch.

Racist, no, politically incorrect, definitely.

Well then, if that is the case, then the organisers of Caribana should pay for it. They should pay for the security, the set up, the clean up, the organization committees, etc. etc.

Why are my tax dollars being used to fund Caribana?

And before you get all hot at me, I feel the same way about Gay Pride.

I am cool with it all, if you want to have a party, hey, knock yourself out.

But pay for it yourself.

The city has been funding this and every other special interest group for far too long. In case the bozos at City hall haven't figured it out, the City is terminally in debt every year. We can't afford to build a new water treatment plant, but we can afford to fund special interest groups?

This is just plain stupid.

Have your party, no problem, just pay for it.

You qualify this nicely by saying, "at the parade"

Every year there is some crazed shooting in the streets, we'll see what happens this year I suppose.

Cops

Ever notice that the cops working Caribana weekend are relatively young? That's because the vetern cops have seniority so are able to take it off whereas the newbies are forced to work it.

Not saying the cops are scared to work that weekend but if they can't be bothered with the hassle of the entire weekend then that's gotta say something.

I agree that the violence is exaggerated but there is an escalation of violence that weekend. Call me a wuss but I like to avoid violence!

I'm not going this year but solely because it's not my thing; just like Pride Week isn't my thing, Indian festivals aren't my thing, Irish River Dancing isn't my thing, etc. (If there was an increase in violence at the Golf and Travel Show, well....!!!!)

I live right in Carabana Central. IT TOTALLY SUCKS!!! About 15 guys have knocked on my door asking if they can sell shit in my front yard! BLA! Just a bunch of noise and garabage to look forward to this weekend!
I know what you mean. When I'm in Toronto I'm usually staying with someone who lives near Lamport Stadium. Carabana events are not nearly as bad as when I actually lived full time in the area but they are still bad for the Carabana weekend. Moreover, of all the groups that have used the stadium in the last 20 years or so that I have, off and on, lived in the area, Carabana is by far the worse for the type of things you mention (but it has improved).

JEEZ...lighten up. I was only making a joke. Thats what (JK) means. Please tell me you have not laughed at a dirty joke. We all have. I have been to Detroit many times for DEMF and i find that the black people in Detroit are even friendlier (sp) than the people here. So a word to the wise, LIGHTEN UP.

BTW...I'm not a racist.

ah Caribana weekend! the only day in a year when all the whites in toronto come together, march down jane and finch and claim take their stolen property back.

i keed! i keed! lol

p.s: I'm staying home. don't wanna get shot
The above must be the most sickening post I have ever seen in a long long long long while.

My my my...ignorance is truly bliss. Alot of you people are wasting your time if you think you can change people with racist views. Its a very long process since most of them were raised that way from they were knee high and who has the time?

When growing up in Kingston, Jamaica where I have never been shot or robbed (go figure eh) my mother always used to say "if yu nuh have nuttn good fi seh, nuh seh nuttn at all"

Here is a person(a trini) who wants to know who is going to enjoy a part of Caribbean culture and you have a bunch of people who arent going responding. Did these people finish school? The question was directed to who is going or intends to go and NOT who isnt or doesnt!

We even have some genius(or is that geni-ass) bringing race into the argument and speaking about the black community in a negative light and then some other genius saying he didnt seee any racist comments. Then they say people have a chip on their shoulder. There was absolutely no need to make a comment on race.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Respect due to you Nicole, CuteInAKilt and others. Enjoy yourselves and as always stay safe. Things do happen when there is a large crowd of people no matter the event.
