Yes, that pick is a top-10 pick, lottery-protected. The conditions are very complicated. It is difficult to explain. For now, just know, if the Leafs suck this year, the Leafs will most likely keep their top 5 pick. The Leafs could surrender their 2028 and 2029 top picks.

From Google Gemini AI.

2026 Pick Condition (Boston Trade)

The pick is Top-5 Protected in the 2026 NHL Draft:

  • If the pick is 6th overall or later: The pick is immediately transferred to the Boston Bruins.
  • If the pick is 1st through 5th overall (Top-5): The Maple Leafs keep the pick, and it slides to the 2027 NHL Draft.

The Complication (Flyers Trade)

If the pick slides to 2027, the conditions get more complicated because the Leafs separately traded their 2027 1st-round pick (Top-10 Protected) to the Philadelphia Flyers (in the Scott Laughton deal).

  • If the pick slides to 2027, the Bruins will receive the pick UNLESS... the 2027 pick is Top-10 Protected (for the Flyers' condition) or is owed to the Flyers due to the prior trade.
  • In the most extreme scenario where both the 2026 pick (to Boston) and the 2027 pick (to Philadelphia) are protected, the pick owed to the Bruins would ultimately become an unprotected 2028 1st-round pick.
In short: Yes, it is Top-5 Protected in 2026.
So Boston has first rights over Flyers since their trade was made first and locked in.
Flyers will get the 2029 pick if Boston gets the 2028.
Leafs could conceivably still trade both their 2028 and 2029 picks.
If they're in a playoff spot by March it's a guarantee they're going to trade for a top 6 winger which will most likely cost a minimum 1st round pick.

The rebuild after the current Matthews contract ends is going to be painful. Look at a team like Anaheim. Out of nowhere first in the Pacific. 5 pts up on 2nd place. The highest scoring team in the league on a per game basis. Their 2 best players are 20 and 21 years of age.

on paper the Leafs have the size, Matthews, Knies, McMann, Lorentz, Roy, Laughton, Carlos and OEL all are big guys but collectively they play small. They may look good in stats with number of hits but vast majority are more of a “gentle contact” hits. Somehow that’s been a continuous trend in the Matthew’s era. They don’t play with a swagger that shows they can’t be intimidated.

Carlos is probably the biggest on the team but he has no grit in him, a typical play was when Marchment ran Stolarz he watched the whole sequence and just stood there and did nothing until Stolarz got into a scrum with Marchment. I give McMann credit for confronting Zidorov after the Laughton hit but overall he’s been a disappointment.

You’re losing 4-1 and looking horrible, in the meantime your top guy just got ran over and knocked out OFTHE game by the same guy who gave Laughton a concussion, yet nobody does a thing.
Looks good for the Leafs getting Gavin McKenna.

OEL did the smart thing, he ran a smaller Bruin and drew a penalty. Domi did the dumb things, first went after the 6-7 guy at the risk of being humiliated and took a dumb penalty to put his team down by 2. The smarter thing would be going after one of the Bruins’ skilled guys. You run Matthews we‘ll run Pastranak.

Blais went after McAvoy's knees. Last I checked he is one of their skilled guys. Their de facto captain. Started a scrum in fact. McMann fought Zadorov. I wouldn't call that nothing. Domi tried to fight Zadorov as well. That's certainly not nothing. Played right into Boston's hands. Leafs don't have a Reaves. You can't have everything. Big bruising fighting hitting skilled fast all in one player. There's only so many players like that out there.

Matthews and Stolarz are out with injuries.

Gavin McKenna highlights. Don't blow this Leafs.

Worse case Leafs donate the 6th overall pick to Boston.
It was Shanahan's last kick at the can so he went all in trading 2 first round picks and 2 decent prospects.
Lost to a better team and now he's all out.

They already donated the 2nd overall and 9th overall to Boston. Note to self. Don't make trades with the Bruins.

What the fuck is this, the Corey Perry love fest?

Why don’t they talk about which teammate’s mom he’s banging.

I'm actually glad the Leafs are doing so poorly. I'm still heartbroken by the Jays world series loss. I'll always be a Leafs fan, but it's kind of nice to still root for a Leaf team that sucks. I doubt the Leafs will make the playoffs, and that's fine with me.

You can't make a Cocker Spaniel behave like a German Sheppard.
For the most part, the Leafs have Cocker Spaniels that will growl or nip at you the odd time, but they don't really bite, or intimidate, or dominate territory.

Having said that, the Leafs are not nearly as good in potential or skilled as a lot of people think.
On the other hand, the collective ability is not as bad as they're showing.
Their passive, non-possession style of hockey is unbearable to watch.
That system is sucking the air out of every player, they look confused and demoralized.
Berube has to go ASAP, he owns the system they're playing.

For all intents Leafs are ahead of only Buffalo in the whole of the Eastern Conference. Leafs also donated to Buffalo 3 pts. Yet they're still only 4 pts out of 1st place in the Atlantic Division.

Leafs have only 1 line that plays in the offensive zone. Hence another game where they are wildly outshot.
It's a tough way to play. The only way they're going to get out of this is if they somehow get the spectacular goaltending they got last season.

That 3rd line looks extremely slow. McMann is much faster and looks better than Joshua. Robertson too looks faster and better than Maccelli. Both are cheaper. Roy was hyped as a legit shut down center but is he really better than Kampf. They both don't generate offense. The whole point was to improve the 3rd line with Marner's money. Against LA Leafs 2nd line was McMann, Robertson, Domi. That was their de facto 3rd line last season. Inferring their 3rd line has not improved and was better last season.

I really hope the Leafs don't make the playoffs. It's a joke how many first round draft picks, that the Leafs have traded away over the yrs. A lot of the Leafs new players are awful, including Joshua, Roy, and Maccelli. Laughton, Stolarz and Matthews keep getting injured, as well as Chris Tanev. The Leafs are going to suffer a long season of futility.
