Very irresponsible...but I don't think they're going to charge him with intentional
oh I know, I just wish they would. If you choose to speed in a residential area then you shoud take on even more responsibility as a driver. We've all sped on a highway when you're following traffic flow and may not realize how fast you actually are going, but residential streets there is no excuse to be speeding to the point that you lose control of the car.

there's a lot of bs in this thread. Here is what is actually going to happen:

1. driver has already been charged with dangerous driving causing death x2, crim neg etc.
2. If he is convicted of any of these which is quite likely, his (parents) insurance company will pay out the victims/family but then can turn around and sue the driver AND/OR the owner of the car = parent. This is because we cannot get insurance for criminal acts, only for carelessness under HTA which is not the charge.

So the parents are indeed properly fucked.

This is just horrible, so senseless. My guess is the kid comes from a rich Asian family. The kids parents will sue for millions.

These kids lives don’t matter just like the kids who die in Palestine by the hands of the Zionist scum, both innocent but you favour one life over the other, hypocrisy of the highest level!

How dare you turn this tragedy into that. As I believe is the case for most people, I grieve for all innocent children who die of any race, in any country, including Arab children and Jewish children because of the unending hostilities between their elders. Especially those children who are too young to have been indoctrinated into hate towards other races by the societies in which they live.

I agree with Xmontrealer, you're disrespecting the death of these kids. Why don't you Foff to the political forum they have multiple threads going on about the middle east and knock yourself out. . I hate when these guys from the political forum come to the Lounge and try to politicize everything.

Yes this is utterly terrible, horrific, appalling, gut wrenching. So how come people act with such a lack of sympathy when Pali kids and being buried alive by bombing? Are their lives worth less? Is this kids negligence any worse then intentionally releasing a bomb on a residential building knowing families live there. Does it somehow make it ok just because some HAMAS douchebag works out of that building?

Learn something: do not take every bad thing that happens to other people and minimize it by saying its not the worst thing that ever happened.

if its a small thing, somebody is whining about some idiotic small thing, fine. But two children get killed, do NOT denigrate the horror of what occurred by saying that worse things has gone on elsewhere.

OF COURSE worse things have happened. Somebody lost 3 kids. Somebody burned to death in a car accident. So what?

You just come across as a low-class moron when you argue like that.

Every day, I can't not believe the amount of bad drivers we have out there. As much as I think cops are over paid, I would have no problem with my tax dollars being reallocated to special road constables giving out serious tickets and impounding cars to bad drivers. I would have them everywhere. All over the highways, streets. Everyday there are accidents clogging up the the major highway because of this shit. 16 year olds killing children in the front yard because they cars are toys.

Last week I was downtown on a one way that was under construction so pilons on the road. The light turned green but a fire truck started coming so I obviously waited. The guy behind me honking, then pulls out passing me knocking down all the pilons and shoots out right in front of the fire truck on Front Street. It just never stops.

The GTA really needs to think of ways to curb this as opposed to a few cameras here and there on traffic lights.
In your ''opinion'' Police Officers are overpaid. ok What would you PAY them?? Remembering the days of the guy with just a Gr. 12 diploma are over. Many have College and yes University Degrees. The amount of violence, rampant gun play in the GTHA is increasing every day.

Horrendous and tragic. Apart from the 2 children who died, so many other related people on both sides whose lives are now permanently damaged due to the driver's immaturity and stupidity.
Immaturity from a 16 year old, who knew?

Heartbreaking , so sad. it was last year around this time that a mother and her 3 young daughters were killed when another stupid irresponsible young driver ran a red light and hit them.
there should be more severe punishments for these kind of people.

Are you sure a parent can be sued? I mean lets say kid is licenced and insured. What wrongdoing did the parent do? Unless it can be proven they did somethibg to encourage the bad driving?

This is from BC so maybe Ontario is different but people might find this interesting..... (btw not a lawyer just discussinf because this is interedting to me and im open to be proven wrong)....

A child’s parents on the other hand, may very well have substantial assets, but are they legally responsible for their children’s actions? The answer in most of Canada is no, however, the law in British Columbia is different. The Parental Liability Act holds parents responsible for intentional loss or damage caused by their children up to a limit of $10,000. Parents won’t be responsible if they can show they supervised the child and discouraged the behaviour, making court cases under this law very rare. Claims have been started for reasons such as a stolen computer and for stealing from and then vandalizing a house.

About 60k a year. Very adequate salary. Especially since my tax dollars goes to waste on bull shit like rouge cops getting suspended with pay for sometimes years. while most jobs no chance that's happens. I would much rather have more cops making less, then fewer cops making 80k or more off our tax dollars. Any other questions???

Thanks for the info.... looks like the big question will be the following....

"However, an owner may avoid liability if he or she can prove the driver acted took or used the car without his or her consent."

What were the circumstances that led to a 16 year old behind the wheel by himself
