A court in Paris has sentenced prominent Islam scholar Tariq Ramadan to 18 years in jail for raping three women, two years after he was given a jail term for a separate rape offence in Switzerland.

The French rape case unfolded in 2017, when two of the three women came forward during the Me Too campaign against sexual abuse and harassment.
Ramadan, a 63-year-old former professor of Islamic studies at St Antony's College in Oxford, did not attend the trial in Paris, although he has always denied the charges.

His lawyers said he was being treated in the Swiss city of Geneva for multiple sclerosis and condemned the trial as a farce.

Judge Corinne Goetzmann told the court that a warrant had been issued for Ramadan's arrest, however Switzerland does not have an extradition treaty with its neighbour.
Ramadan is also facing a permanent ban from French territory.

The court ruled that the 18-year jail term was justified by the "extreme seriousness of the acts",
"Consenting to sex does not imply consenting to any sexual act whatsoever," the judge said.

Leaving court, one of the three women involved in the case, Henda Ayari, told reporters that the judges had believed her, and she spoke of "nine years of suffering and struggle" since she had first come forward to make a complaint.

In 2017 she told French TV that the scholar had "literally pounced on me like a wild animal" in a hotel room in 2012.

She told reporters on Wednesday that she had been thinking about all the other victims: "of the victims who had the courage to file a complaint like me, but also of those who could not summon up the strength, and those who had withdrawn their complaint because of threats and reprisals."

The second woman to come forward in France accused Ramadan of raping in her in a hotel in Lyon in 2009, whereas the Swiss case involved a woman who said he had raped her in a Geneva hotel in 2008.
Meanwhile, Tariq Ramadan has himself reacted to the sentence, calling for a "new trial, a trial with both parties present".

"I will not let this decision stand," he told Le Parisien newspaper. Insisting that it was his health that had stopped him from coming to Paris, Ramadan said if he had not wanted to attend, he would have not have assembled a legal team.

He has long said the allegations against him are part of a campaign of slander. He told Le Parisien that he was the victim of a political bid "to remove a Muslim intellectual".
It is difficult to see how a second trial could take place without him agreeing to pre-trial detention in France, seeing that he is now subject to an arrest warrant.

An 18-year-old Afghan intern is under criminal investigation after allegedly exposing himself and touching his erect penis in front of two second-grade girls during his placement at a primary school in Düsseldorf. Police have searched his apartment and seized his mobile phone. The incident has infuriated the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has called for his deportation in a video produced about the incident.

The alleged flashing at Brehm School (photo) took place on March 9 during afternoon care and only came to light only after a father called the school.

A spokeswoman for the Düsseldorf district government told Bild it had been an unobserved moment at a sink — though a teacher was in fact present in the room at the time.

The teacher had been showing the class a film and was unaware of what was happening nearby. After the child witnessed the Afghan touching his penis and reported it to her parents, the school subsequently banned the intern from the premises, according to Bild newspaper.

The case did not stop there. The same teacher recalled a separate incident from three days earlier, on March 6, in which the intern had grabbed her buttocks.

She had initially written it off as accidental contact, but the second incident changed her assessment entirely. Notably, neither the school nor its sponsoring organization reported either incident to the authorities — it was the teacher herself who went to the police.

An investigator familiar with the case told Bild: “Unfortunately, we often see this with regard to crimes in schools, where schools prefer to keep a low profile.”

The teacher was due to give a further statement to the police this week but fell ill unexpectedly.

When questioned by police, the young Afghan admitted to groping the teacher. Since he holds asylum seeker status, officers notified the immigration authorities following his interrogation. His internship at the school had been scheduled to last three weeks. The examination of his confiscated phone is still underway.

The Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office confirmed to Bild that an investigation is open but declined to provide further details, citing the age of those involved.

The AfD produced a video about the incident, describing the Afghan as someone who has “never known mixed-gender schools before. In Afghanistan, girls are excluded from the school system. During Tarek’s internship, something happened that left everyone stunned. The Afghan dropped his trousers and exposed himself to two little girls in the classroom, and this despite the fact that even the teacher was in the room, who claims not to have noticed anything.”

The report further notes that the incident only came to light when the girls in the school spoke to their parents.

“The parents of the traumatized girls had to arrange this on their own. Tarek was banned from the school grounds and is not allowed to continue his internship. No further consequences,” the video reads.

The party further states that the Afghan “does not belong in the classroom, he belongs on an airplane. Back to Afghanistan.”

This is not the first time a foreigner working in a German educational system has been accused of gross misconduct. A Syrian intern was accused of molesting two 4-year-old children in a Neubrandenburg kindergarten, according to police, in 2022.
