There's never enough money until you have to.
More important, this arrangement may be more attractive and advantageous for the EU.
Trump was pushing for 5% GDP defense spending, not realistic.
Under NATO they would be spending all that money and still be under the U.S. thumb.
This way they're not bitches but partners to some degree, they determine how and where the money is spent.
They can also dictate their own policy, defending Europe as opposed to predatory like NATO, looking to antagonize and weaken Russia.
In his last term, Trump was pushing for 2%...which was what it had been for years.
They essentially laughed at him threatening to leave.
That was the context of my response.

They "laughed" at him?
24 out of 32 countries reached a minimum of 2%, that's hardly laughing at him.
Then he jacked it up to 5%. Trump has a habit of moving the goal posts, just like he said there was no room left to move on tarrifs on Canada, even though Canada began addressing the bogus claim about immigration and fentanyl to appease him.
No chance he might be a liar and has his own agenda?

So much so that the Democrats twisted it into their own campaign messaging: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/biden-trump-trudeau-1.5385660
How quickly we forget.
If he hadn't threatened to leave NATO they wouldn't have done anything.
Canada, a G7 nation still hasn't.

Where in the article does it say they laughed at him because he was asking for 2%?
Again, 24 of 32 countries reached a minimum of 2%, and then changed it to 5%.
Why is that?

The US stopped sharing intel with Ukraine
Now the Kremlin is stepping up attacks knowing Ukraine can't see them coming.

trump is a Putin stooge.

Trump is far nire than a stooge, asset orapologist/sympathizer. His actions to cut intel and freeze arms already in transit, and refuse to imp;lement Congress and Senate appropriations for military aid has been illeggalty stopped.

All in a clear benefit to Russia and their imperilaistic ambitions directled soley by Trump.

No question Trump is a full fledge russian Operative.

Are you serious? They were laughing at him period. NATO funding was one of the items he was pushing them on and they laughed behind his back.
If you prefer to bury your head in semantics that's you're choice.
In 2016 only a handful of NATO members were meeting their commitments. By the time Trump left office in 2020, a few more upped their commitments.

Not sure where you get your "24 of 32" meeting their 2% but I think that's way off as of a year ago...

Then say they were laughing at him, don't make up shit about NATO just to be right.
Doesn't matter when he left office, he made that demand of 5% in January of this year. Even the U.S. doesn't spend that according to NATO figures.
But I guess that's just semantics to you.

Making what up exactly?

I said they were laughing at him. It was the NATO summit. They were put on the spot and called out for not living up to their NATO commitments.

He called them out when he was in office, and wants them to up their spending now. A couple of countries have already committed to spending at least 5%.

What part of this confuses you?

Or do you just like someone else paying your way all the time?
