It would have been dumb if Palestinians thought it was dumb and acted accordingly.

Egalitarianism is a fantasy, because no one wants to surrender what they have earned as a result of their own ingenuity and effort at the simple demand of a less deserving person. I don't want to live in a society/world where criminals and murderers can demand the same rights and opportunities as those making positive contributions to society. Some rights have to be earned. There is a social contract.
Hamas and its supporters simply do not deserve statehood. The responsible nations of the world understand that planting weeds is a bad idea, because weeds spread, compromise surrounding gardens, use up resources, and produce nothing of value.
There wouldn't even be a Palestinian demand for statehood if Iran wasn't putting its proxies up to it, and if the objective of statehood wasn't the termination of the state of Israel.
