WALKERTON, Ont.—
The striking scene Wednesday in Walkerton,
with hundreds of people waiting up to six hours in the cold for a chance at a family doctor, underscores the crisis state of primary care in Ontario.
An acute shortage of family physicians in the province has left 2.5 million Ontarians without a doctor — a number that will soar to 4.4 million by 2026 as more
physicians reach retirement age or decide to flee the profession.
Health-care leaders and medical organizations have been pushing for
targeted reforms and boosts in fundingto connect more people with primary care, a move they say will improve patient outcomes and ease pressures on the health-care system. They warn that the province must do more to close the gaps.
