One of my concerns about progressive political domination in California is the lack of debate within government and the public sphere. When I am in California, I am concerned that Californians aren't getting information that the rest of us are reading and hearing.

After these fires, there will be lively debate about how to prevent fires and how to fight fires. There will always be wildfires in California, but now people will examine if everything is being done that can be done.

This might upset some progs here, but I think Gavin Newsom's political career is over. I think the mood of the Democratic party is turning towards practical candidates without idealistic baggage.

Whether this is fair or not, there will be enough questions about whether the State of California did everything it could in prevention. There's probably enough doubt to prevent Californians even sending him to the Senate.

Let's face it. When the past fires were relatively isolated and many times in more remote areas, the debate didn't really put much pressure on Sacramento.

The vast majority of people do not confuse climate change disasters with municipal or state policy failures.
Otherwise you'd have turfed the governors of Florida and Texas over hurricane disaster failures.

Except of course for obvious failures.

I found the Kardashian's location reference funny. It's like when something happens in L.A. people want to know "how far is that from the Kardashians?"

Glad the Kardashians are alright. ;)
America became officially collectively stupid once the Kardashians became rich and famous.

As for the Kardashians and other celebrities right now they are celebrating like crazy. They are dancing the dance of fire while making thankful prayer to the god of fire for having burn down Diddy`s house with the evidence ;)

There's something to be said for being rich and stupid rather than stagnating and self-righteous.

Please educate me.
I am open and I am no climate change crusader.
But provide proof while you are at it.
First, prove it to me is a rhetorical crutch. I don't expect to prove anything to you as I would not expect you to prove climate change is the biggest instigator of California wildfires.

It is estimated that over 90% of wildfires are triggered by man-made incidents. (You've probably heard about the fireworks investigation regarding the current fire disaster.) Does a warmer climate contribute to wildfires? Of course. Southern California is also a desert. So extreme climate and fires are part of the natural order. Then add 39 million people to the mix almost quadrupling the population since 1950.

Modern Southern California is essentially an extreme man-made adaptation. Many efforts now by California to limit man's impact on the forest floors, water, wildlife in the name of ecology are frivolous. 39 million people have already changed the landscape far beyond its natural state.

There is room to believe that climate change is an issue without believing the State of California is effectively dealing with their problems with wildfires. Adaptation is one of man's greatest strengths.

Its not whether they were started by people but whether the conditions were there that anything started could turn into a massive, out of control, fire tornado type blaze.

The entire planet is feeling the effects of climate change and extreme weather events, not just California and not just the built up areas.
What should be the canary in your mines is home insurance, where there are now too many places where insurers won't issue insurance because of risk of extreme weather events and fires.

The fires in Pacific Palisades continue to burn, BC water bombers have joined the fight. If the fires reach Malibu, Newsom will resign.

A new fire has started up in Ventura County, this has the mark of arson upon it. The fire started in a used tire repository. The irony in all this is that poorer East LA has remained unaffected by the fires.

It's a huge fucking deal there.

Unfortunately, that conversation is going to be extremely difficult to have in this political environment, as we've just seen demonstrated.

No matter the political environment, fire in California, like in northern Quebec or BC and Alberta, will always exist. The forests are just way too big to prevent fires.

Remember that water bomber planes only open routes for the on-ground team to make their way to contain the fire. You do not stop such fires with water bombers. Of course, rain is the best but...

In California the poor (in the burned area being poor is having houses of only 1 or 2 million) will sell their land and the rich will build even bigger mansions. They will enjoy it until the next time it burns down. No biggie for them.

But California did pursue a "total fire suppression" policy for decades, if I recall.
Which was a bad policy that has only been slowly changing.
