There has been absolutely zero discussion of the Paralympics.

Why are we ignoring them? Are they not worthy of our attention? I realize it is not as exciting as regular able-bodied athletics, but neither is women's sports compared to men's in most cases and we have threads dealing with women's sports.

Why have we had no threads on the Paralympics?

All true I suppose.
No it's not true.

The reality is this, nobody should feel ashamed for not watching something that isn't entertaining to them.

This thread reminds of some kind of woke culture kid pushing their BS agenda.

Nobody should be "shamed" into watching anything.

Let it be organic. If people are interested in it, they will start threads and talk about it. If they are not interested in it, they won't. Simple as that. That's how life works.

I guess, in a way, I was mocking the woke crowd and the media, the ones who say that we should pay more/equal attention to women's sport and that they deserve equal pay. The media actually pushes it on us even though, in reality, there is not a ton of interest compared to major league/top tier/elite male sporting events.

But it is also a serious question. Toronto, along with the surrounding area, is a very liberal big city with lots of wokes. Why has nobody said anything about the games themselves or complained about the lack of discussion? TERB, overall, is pretty open-minded.

For full disclosure, I have paid no attention to these games and do not feel guilty. Just as I do not feel guilty about saying that most women's sports (including Catelyn Clarke) are vastly inferior to men's (from purely an athletic perspective) and that is why I do not watch very much of that either.

But I thought that it was an interesting observation possibly worthy of a discussion.

Q: What's more satisfying than winning a gold medal in the paralympics?

A: Walking.
Not all of them cannot walk. But I see your point.

I am happy that as a society we provide them with such games. Should we or is it very important that we watch it as the regular Olympics? No.

I totally agree about the women's sports issue, but I think the reason that gets pushed on us more is simple math. There are way more women doing the pushing and there is a bigger women's market to pushed to.

How many people with physical disabilities are there in contrast to women's population?

Interesting observation. TBH, I think that a lot of Paralympians are very, very happy and accepting of the life they have.
Yeah. A crazy dictator could ask them to fight and invade another country. Then die or be really fucked up for life.

Perspective is important. Having a disability sucks but having one because you had to follow the directive of a prick is just horrible.

We could look at it slightly differently than from just a numbers perspective, although I will address that point 1st. It is true that, in theory and based on population, the women's market is just about equal to the men's. The problem with that argument is that men are still, by far the largest consumer of sports worldwide. I don't seem to notice many commercials for tampons and Revlon even though women are half the population.

I think why we're seeing more and more women's sports being covered is for no other reason than political correctness. Just like we see more women and people of colour in commercials, news coverage, TV casts etc., etc. I have no problem with any of that. But when it affects my ability to enjoy sports..........

Maybe the title could have been "Should We Be Ashamed?".

You compared the Paralympics to women's sports, not men's. From a numbers perspective, even if you want to chalk it up to political correctness, there are still more women pushing that correctness as well as a bigger audience to push it to. I think the amount of young girls and women that will watch/follow the WNBA when it gets here, is far bigger then if we were to have some type men's professional disabled basketball team. So if the networks think they have a shot at making money, they have a vesting interest in pushing it too. For the record, I've seen tons of tampon and maxi pad commercials watching sports. TON'S.

On the other hand, having all these women in the broadcast now as analyst, sportcasters, etc...is totally politically correct driven and it's fucking sad because most of them suck and so the job isn't going to the most talented people.

I'm not sure I compared them. I was more equating them as things I don't watch and don't feel guilty about even though it may be politically incorrect.

But I think we are pretty much on the same page.

Much like with women’s sports I have no interest in watching at all!

Shrug - there are many things in society that we're shamed into supporting or even pretending to like, support or pretend that there is some sort of equality going on. The Lounge posts are full of it.

We sometimes recognize it in this case or we don't because it's become the water we swim in.

The title should have been: "I should be ashamed." You could have started a thread but you didnt. So now you are trying to guilt the rest of us for not doing so. Shame on you.

Your delusion shines through when you say women's sports are being covered due to political correctness.
In the US, the national women's soccer team is far more successful than the men's team and easily outdraws the men in both attendance and viewership.
In Paris, Canadians watched Summer McIntosh swimming more than any other athlete or event.
US women won 26 of the 40 gold medals in Paris. Katie Ledecky is the most successful and most popular swimmer and Sydney McLaughlin is the most successful and most popular track athlete. They draw huge viewerships
The WNBA All star game in Chicago on July 20 drew viewership of 3.4 million. The NBA All Star game in Indianapolis drew 5.5 million
Games this year featuring Caitlin Clark and the Fever have more viewership than several NBA games.
I bet you the US Open final featuring Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka will draw just as much as the men's final with a US male in the final
Women's sports are increasingly being covered due to improving profitability not due to political correctness. GYHAS

Why would I start a thread on something that I have no interest in? I even admitted it.

The purpose of my thread was to discuss the phenomenon of nobody mentioning it, even though it's in the newspapers and on sportscasts.

And what is overall WNBA attendance and viewership compared to NBA. Men's golf outdraws women's golf. The PGA pays out more than the LPGA. Why? Men's tennis tournaments routinely outdraw women's.
The men's all-star viewership was about 60-65% higher. How about men's hockey vs. women's hockey?
If there's any delusion going on, it is at your end. It is a very, very, very rare exception when there is more interest in a ladies athletic competition compared to a man's competition.

I have no idea what the numbers are, but if I checked your "Clarke phenomenon" thread, I wonder how many posts you made and how many everybody else did.

I bet you the US Open final featuring Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka will draw just as much as the men's final with a US male in the final

Improving is far from equal. If you have 10 viewers and then you have 20 viewers you can say that we are the fastest growing sport. We increased by 100%

You're entitled to like whatever you like. I never disparage someone for something that is a matter of taste. The most I could do would be to explain why it would not be to my taste. But do not think that your tastes apply to the majority of people.
