I’m not defending the kid; I’m pointing out how everyone’s over reaction to this does not stand up to cold analysis.
Once we’ve got all of our humans looked after, then I’ll spare some resources for animals (same principle applies to animal shelters).
Cops can search my place any day of the week. On the off chance I had something I didn’t want them to find, they wouldn’t find it.

First, yes you are defending him. There is no reason to question the work the police did or the outcry of the community. Second, there is no overreaction to this. Killing animals is not only just sick, but it could be a sign of a psychopath.
Then you seem to suggest that there should be some order or sequence to solving crime. Get real idiot, There are hundreds/thousands of cops with many divisions and crime units. Stop pretending like they had to put a murder case to the side to address this issue.

Further, your incredulity at the concept of allocating scarce resources based on priority objectives tells me that you’ve really never been in charge of anything important. Dead raccoons and cats don’t matter when you have large numbers of people getting shot and overdosing. Anyone that would prioritize the welfare of animals over that of people is far closer to sociopathy than I’ll ever be.
Well, when you’ve worn a uniform to defend people, you tend to take a very dim view of those who make the uniform look bad; especially those who have been in positions of high authority. It’s somewhat like a family member betraying you. Likewise, when you get familiar with what a crowd of angry people can do to other people (even kids), you tend not to get too upset about dead animals.
Pvt, since you mentioned car theft being a concern of yours and resources not being allocated properly, at least alluding to it.

If you believe in prevention then this kid needs to be on a watch list and medicated. A lack of empathy in watching animals die horribly is a clear and recognized red flag to a sociopath who will graduate to killing humans.
