To win championships in North American team sports, you need to have ownership who care more about winning than profitability.

Rogers doesn't care about winning championships because they don't have any broadcasting rights beyond the Wild Card round of postseason. Their strategy is geared towards being sufficiently competitive for any post season berth that they aren't mathematically eliminated before most of the expensive seats are sold for September games.

While the changes to the stadium have enhanced the viewing enjoyment for ticket buyers, the field itself, and geography, are impediments when it comes to signing free agent talent. It's not enough to match offers from other clubs; the Jays need to offer more, in many cases, too much.

By striving for 'near parity performance', the Blue Jays consistently miss out on the top amateur draftees, but they haven't been very good at choosing their talent, either.

These are the first round selections by the Blue Jays from 2016 to 2022:

2016: T. J Zeuch, (21st pick): 2-4 with 4.59 ERA for the Jays, traded to the Cardinals for cash.
2017: Logan Warmoth, (22): No Major League PT, lost in Rule 5 draft.
2018: Jordan Groshans: Never played for Toronto, traded to Marlins for Zack Pop and Anthony Bass.
2019: Alek Manoah, (11): One great year, fat.
2020: Austin Martin, (5): Part of the Jose Berrios trade package.
2021: Gunnar Hoglund, (19): Major piece in the Matt Chapman trade package.
2022: Brandon Barriera, (23): A few innings for Dunedin in 2023/24; Tommy John surgery, out until at least mid 2025.

During the same period, the Baltimore Orioles, who lost 100+ games in 2018, 2019 and 2021, (but not in the 60 game 2020 season), drafted these players:

2017: D L Hall, (22): Primary piece in the 2024 trade with Brewers for Corbin Burnes.
2018: Grayson Rodriguez, (12): former top 3 overall Major League prospect, currently on Orioles ML roster.
2019: Adley Rutschman, (1): On track for Hall of Fame career.
2020: Heston Kjerstad, (5): Former top 5 overall Major League prospect, currently on Orioles ML roster.
2021: Colton Cowser, (19): Former top 10 overall Major League prospect, currently on Orioles ML roster.
2022: Jackson Holliday, (1): Current #1 Major League prospect.

I believe Atkins and Shapiro are also responsible for the June draft selections. It's difficult to build a sturdy home on a foundation of sand.
Rogers sure care about food price profitability.....LMAO

$1,200+ for the best seats, 2 available. 35 minutes to first pitch, so I'm going to guess they'll be empty for todays game.

Just like the Shanaplan.

Bichette/Nylander Small, can score but can't play defence.
Vladdy/Mathews The chosen one. Big powerful but haven't seen it lately
Varsho/Marner Fast, can play defence but can't hit
Tavares/Springer The big free agent signing that was suppose to put us over the top and win the big one. But has been underwhelming and slowing down with age.
Schneider/Keefe Doesn't have a clue how to coach

Jays paying a lot of coin for very little results at present.

Attendance is strong thus far though. Have to wonder how long that will continue at this rate.

The Los Angeles Angels are the worst draw in road attendance so far, for several reasons:

Ohtani's gone, Mike Trout's injured again, and 12 of their road games have been against the Royals, Pirates, Marlins and Rays, (#'s 25, 26, 28 and 29 in home attendance).

Oakland A's averaging 6,222 per home date...including 2,895 against the Rangers on May 6. Pro-rated for an entire season, that would be less than 504,000. The A's smallest crowd last year was 2,064, and in the American League, official attendance is always based on ticket sales, so there weren't necessarily that many bums actually warming seats in the park.

Good on Buck Martinez to ask about this being the right group of players or not. The thing that drives me crazy is the fact that Shapiro and Atkins are joined at the hip. Their families probably spend vacations together, as they are likely the best of friends.. We are not going to see any GM changes as long as Shapiro has a safe job. I remember when Shapiro first took office the word on him was he wanted to be very involved in everything. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, for all we know Rogers is putting spending restrictions based on the renovations. They probably put Atkins as the fall guy to try to convince the people of this defence run prevention strategy. In todays game, if they want to shut down one or two single players (hitters), advanced scouting reports make that very possible. A good lineup literally needs protection after protection after protection in the order.

11 and a half games back in the middle of May and this Blue Jays team is an embarrassment to everyone but the front office and those being paid to write, tweet and broadcast this astonishing level of mediocrity and pure defeatism. It’s time for new leadership and management to be put in place or they’ll be drawing 15,000 in July if they’re lucky. To renovate a 35 year old stadium cradled in the heart of one of the busiest and most congested areas of downtown while raising the price of admission, food and merchandising for this level of failure is a crime. Keep supporting this clown show, keep enjoying this mediocrity. Until fans rise up and say enough is enough, this will continue unabated. It’s been almost a decade; what the fuck do you think will happen next if you keep feeding the machine? What a colossal joke on every lifelong fan that has to witness this gruesome spectacle of asset mismanagement and extremely well-paid but underperforming shmucks at a time when baseball exists to cure what ails us during dark times and instead we’re fed endless excuses and are privy to bizarre, oddly scheduled press conferences that warp the mind and hollow the soul.
