Romano is unintentionally a master at playing the numbers game, where the presentation of his stats are concerned. He blows the game that really hurts like he did on Tuesday….. then his next few outings might be no runs allowed but he loaded the bases or came really close to messing it up etc. etc. total nailbiter scenarios…. Mixed in with a couple of blown saves like Tuesday that really hurt…. But somehow miraculously he keeps his ERA down and he looks good on paper. If the Blue Jays fold this season, I think he’s one of their best trade assets. I really don’t want Ross Atkins handling any trades for the future anymore. I think his time is done. This team stinks Romano blowing the game on Tuesday is the least of my concerns.

Oh how I wish this team kept Bichette/Guerrero/Teoscar as its core. In my dreams Travis Schneider is also hitting lead off….. they signed Teoscar Hernandez instead of Kevin Kiermaier, and they traded out of breath constantly Springer for a jar of pine tar.

Thread trivia:

@Toronto Passions actually went 25 consecutive days without mentioning Teoscar Hernandez in this thread, but 20 of those days were during spring training.
I know I’m like a broken record player ….this organization completely mismanaged that man, and it made me sick from day one. But hey look on the bright side…. 2024 we get to watch Eric Swanson throw batting practice like a one pitch pony show that has had the entire league figure out his splitter. Three cheers for scouting reports and how detailed they can be!

You left out Gurriel.

One of the worst offenders for lack of hustle was Lloyd Moseby. On infield ground balls, he often slowed up several feet before the first base bag.

Atkins, Shapiro and Rogers are all in bed with each other. Who knows what kind of conversations go on, and after all these renovations. Maybe Rogers wanted to cut back on the spending. Fighting Guerrero on arbitration….and maybe that’s why they didn’t get a significant bat after attempting for Ohtani. I think Shapiro will take a different tone on Atkins once Rogers realizes they are not making any more money with Shapiro. OK so the renovations are done and now what? Where is the winning team? Did the 2000s not teach this franchise anything? Toronto is a hockey town and it always will be…. Toronto fans do not support a struggling baseball team no matter what. Like all sports, the president will get rid of the GM once the president’s job is in jeopardy.

It just sucks that they completely wasted the momentum from 2021, 2022 and maybe a little bit of 2023…… and it was wasted because of some idiot 1980s ideology about defence and run prevention wins the World Series. Yeah I understand this is the day and age of analytics and advanced scouting reports….. but there needs to be some sort of an eye test accountability and excitement momentum of the big hit power offence.

To win championships in North American team sports, you need to have ownership who care more about winning than profitability.

Rogers doesn't care about winning championships because they don't have any broadcasting rights beyond the Wild Card round of postseason. Their strategy is geared towards being sufficiently competitive for any post season berth that they aren't mathematically eliminated before most of the expensive seats are sold for September games.

While the changes to the stadium have enhanced the viewing enjoyment for ticket buyers, the field itself, and geography, are impediments when it comes to signing free agent talent. It's not enough to match offers from other clubs; the Jays need to offer more, in many cases, too much.

By striving for 'near parity performance', the Blue Jays consistently miss out on the top amateur draftees, but they haven't been very good at choosing their talent, either.

These are the first round selections by the Blue Jays from 2016 to 2022:

2016: T. J Zeuch, (21st pick): 2-4 with 4.59 ERA for the Jays, traded to the Cardinals for cash.
2017: Logan Warmoth, (22): No Major League PT, lost in Rule 5 draft.
2018: Jordan Groshans: Never played for Toronto, traded to Marlins for Zack Pop and Anthony Bass.
2019: Alek Manoah, (11): One great year, fat.
2020: Austin Martin, (5): Part of the Jose Berrios trade package.
2021: Gunnar Hoglund, (19): Major piece in the Matt Chapman trade package.
2022: Brandon Barriera, (23): A few innings for Dunedin in 2023/24; Tommy John surgery, out until at least mid 2025.

During the same period, the Baltimore Orioles, who lost 100+ games in 2018, 2019 and 2021, (but not in the 60 game 2020 season), drafted these players:

2017: D L Hall, (22): Primary piece in the 2024 trade with Brewers for Corbin Burnes.
2018: Grayson Rodriguez, (12): former top 3 overall Major League prospect, currently on Orioles ML roster.
2019: Adley Rutschman, (1): On track for Hall of Fame career.
2020: Heston Kjerstad, (5): Former top 5 overall Major League prospect, currently on Orioles ML roster.
2021: Colton Cowser, (19): Former top 10 overall Major League prospect, currently on Orioles ML roster.
2022: Jackson Holliday, (1): Current #1 Major League prospect.

I believe Atkins and Shapiro are also responsible for the June draft selections. It's difficult to build a sturdy home on a foundation of sand.
