...The problem is Joey Votto has had such a bad average his last two years but the small sample size of his power numbers last year were fantastic. A full season of at bats according to his pace, would’ve had him hit 40 HR and over 100 RBI....

2023 is the most unusual stats line for a leadoff hitter, ever.

Personally, I don't like the OPS stat, because it essentially credits batting average twice. On Base Percentage plus Isolated Power, (Slugging Percentage minus Batting Average), is much more meaningful. It approximates the fraction of a base earned by the batter per plate appearance. Adding Hit by Pitch plus Stolen Bases minus 1.5 * Caught Stealing minus Ground into Double Play to the numerator would be even better. The equation would be:

(TB + BB + HBP + SB) - (GDP + [1.5 * CS])/PA

For Schwarber in 2023, the figure would be:

(277 + 126 + 6 + 0) - (4 +3) = 402/720 = .558

I’ve definitely been a little crazy lately regarding various things in my private life, but I just feel some good vibes going on here for some reason. I can’t explain it. I hate Ross Atkins and everything about him. I think he’s a fucking moron…. but for some unexplainable reason, my instincts are telling me that this very well might be the team. The good Lord (omg) 😇 knows I’m full of mistakes at times …….but my baseball instincts have always been excellent.

Like I mentioned previously, I’m willing to bet I talk about him in 2024 more than anyone else on the Internet. Lol

This team is giving me a flashback to 1992. And the failures of 1991…… if Dalton Varsho can do anything similar to Candy Maldonado in 1992, I think we got this.

I know it sounds crazy my gut is giving me good feelings….. I think the in fall of 2024, there is going to be a special feeling. My baseball antennas are heating up. A week ago this team was pissing me off because of their lack of changes over the off-season….. I still think they should’ve gotten Bellinger instead of Kevin Kiermaier….. but I don’t think any of that matters anymore lmao. I feel like this is the team to take it to the next level.

His OPS+ over the last 3 years is pretty good: 122, 131, 149
Way better than the league avg.

This .558 stat, how much better than the league avg?

Without looking it up, I believe Sports Illustrated has the Blue Jays predicted as finishing third in the AL East. Their failures the past two seasons have them as sleepers. With the right chemistry of prospects that are coming right up now currently through the pipeline, you can only assume there’s going to be one or two breakout players….. this has World Series written all over it.

I will quote this exact post in October lol.

This article is written for the benefit of people who know next-to-nothing about baseball. I found this quote to be funny:

"The Blue Jays’ main goal is to make it to the playoffs and win at least one playoff game."

ie: just enough to justify a steep increase in ticket prices for the 2025 season.

My gut tells me the Jays didn't do enough in the off-season to improve, but if several players have bounce back years or breakout seasons, you never know. I will watch of course in the early going and take it from there.

I see some well executed pressure at bats. I’m still feeling the bug of when the season actually starts, and how we will see some great things this year.

Vladimir is looking bad ass right now! We need that swagger!

Here's a feature article about Paolo Espino, who pitched five scoreless innings with 8 Ks today:

Definitely watch the short videos of his curveball.

If it was my decision, I would DFA Wes Parsons and add Espino to the 40 man roster as soon as Manoah's status is favourable.

Uh, Oh Jays fans. These predictions just in from The Athletic, numbered in order in the story:

1. Blue Jays manager John Schneider gets canned
Jim has this pegged as the year’s first manager firing, and we can all see it happening, right? Schneider’s team has made the playoffs twice, but failed to win a game. Jim predicts a sluggish start will be the last straw. Plus, bench coach Don Mattingly is the perfect interim manager candidate.
2. A feisty trade deadline?
Superstars could be on the move this summer. Jim has three mega-trades: Pete Alonso to the Cubs, Paul Goldschmidt to the Astros and — after the aforementioned Jays collapse — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the Giants. Hoo buddy. If three players of that caliber move at the deadline, the second half will be fun.

The Athletic is being kind. I don’t think they’ve accounted for the utter incompetence of Atkins and Shapiro. Management will hang pat and come up with new excuses and bold predictions. Nothing good happens until they are gone.

I haven't watched any spring training but I've heard there has been a concerted effort across the lineup to raise launch angles. It could lead to more strikeouts but also to more doubles and home runs. What they need to improve on most from last season is hitting with runners in scoring position. How many times did we leave guys on 3rd with one out?

I have Baltimore and Tampa Bay fighting for the AL East title. Both should have 90-93 wins. Yankees would be there if they didn't lose Cole for potentially the season.
I think if we're going to make the WC we'll need to have at least 87 wins. The keys are Gausman's health, Vlad and Bo having career seasons and the bullpen miraculously being decent. Also Varsho's going to need to be a lot better than he was last season.
This division is so tough. I hope your instincts are right Philip.

I'm not as impressed with Mattingly's managerial record as are others. I think he underperformed in LA with a big budget lineup. And, the only good season he had in Miami was a shortened season.

Also Varsho's going to need to be a lot better
In an earlier post I said this exact thing. I made a comparison saying Varsho is going to have to do something similar to Candy Maldonado in 1992. 20+ homeruns, 270+ average and I really think this is the team… if Vladimir can put up something similar to Joe Carter in 1992, and then if Bichette can put up something similar to Alomar in 1992, then of course also Justin Turner being comparable to Dave Winfield…. I truly think we got this.

Plus I just started chatting to friend of mine from 1992 so I think that’s a good luck charm.
