I didn’t read the Bill of course but how long before they use this bill to shut down sites like LL and TERB? And any other agency site out there.
Muslims are worried because of the Islamaphobia that has people supporting genocide.Could this affect TERB?
Online harms bill coming next week, PM says; promises focus on kids, not censorship (thestar.com)
Organizations like the National Council of Canadian Muslims also expressed worries that efforts to target terrorism-related online content could disproportionately affect their members.
Jewish advocacy groups have also called for the legislation amid a spike in antisemitic and other hateful rhetoric online in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.
Why would muslim organizations be against this but Jewish groups for it? I believe the platform would have 24 hours to remove any offending posts. I'm sure for its' own protection TERB would probably ban any posters that it deems would put the board at risk. TERB already has rules against hate speech.
That makes no sense. This should help prevent Islamophobes from spewing hate speech. That's why the Jews are for it, to help eliminate anti-Semitic hate speech. One would think that both sides should be in favor of reducing hateful rhetoric. Aren't you in favour of that?Muslims are worried because of the Islamaphobia that has people supporting genocide.
I think making unsubstantiated claims of things like genocide or posting fake pictures with the intent of demonizing a particular race or religion etc. might fit the definition as it pertains to this measure.Do you think supporting genocide is hate speech, shack?
Absolutely. For two reasons. The first is your concern however this MAY fall under 'generic' porn and thus will likely to continue. The second concern is that the definition of "Hate" speech is ever changing and getting more political. I can see this being used as a political hammer to suppress discussions on things that should be discussed.I didn’t read the Bill of course but how long before they use this bill to shut down sites like LL and TERB? And any other agency site out there.
Bingo...They're going right after free speech just like we thought they would.. I can see this being used as a political hammer to suppress discussions on things that should be discussed.
Nah, just speech they don't like. It boggles my mind that people just can't see how these laws can easily be turned against them.Bingo...They're going right after free speech just like we thought they would.
I agree. That makes no sense. This should help prevent Islamophobes from spewing hate speech. That's why the Jews are for it, to help eliminate anti-Semitic hate speech. One would think that both sides should be in favor of reducing hateful rhetoric. Aren't you in favour of that?
Maybe one side is more prone to this type of rhetoric than the other. Maybe one side is weaponizing their rhetoric. Of course I'm not making any accusations. I'm simply speculating.
Tell that to the ICJ.I think making unsubstantiated claims of things like genocide or posting fake pictures with the intent of demonizing a particular race or religion etc. might fit the definition as it pertains to this measure.
It almost sounds like you are against this legislation. If so, why.
And none of that has anything to do with my question.I agree.
One side is presently committing genocide, that is as far as you can weaponize racism.
Tell that to the ICJ.
If you can get them to close the file you have an argument.
Until then, Israel is going on trial for genocide, the evidence is overwhelming and most people around the world think zionism = genocide.
In which case, the people defending genocide are the most evil and racist that you can get as a human.
Supporters of genocide should all be banned.
Feel free to bring in the mods and see if they think backing genocide is a reason to ban people.
We don’t know if TERB is hosted in Canada. The domain is not Canadian but even that can registered with a Canadian registrar.terb is not hosted in Canada already, so unless the feds are going to get all providers to block sites I don't think that can change.
Not sure about LL.
From what I have read about the act, I can’t see any part that would target TERB, LL or other escort related site. The only remote way I could see it used against escort advertising sites is if trafficking is involved.I didn’t read the Bill of course but how long before they use this bill to shut down sites like LL and TERB? And any other agency site out there.
The bill has all kinds of power grabs in it, but hey, if he promises
What if they came here looking something sexually rated but by accident discover some hate speech? Maybe not likely, but still possible. From what I have read about the act, I can’t see any part that would target TERB, LL or other escort related site. It seems to be targeted more at hate speech, revenge porn, sextortion and child abuse online.
Note that this bill is different than the senate bill that is proposing to require age verification for adult sites among other measures. That is a proposed bill put together by a number of senators, and I believe that the government has already said that they are not in favour.
Or a negative review…. I mean to us is sounds stupid but stupid people are in power. What if they came here looking something sexually rated but by accident discover some hate speech? Maybe not likely, but still possible.
I think you have too much faith in humanity. They've already demonstrated they can define hate speech to be whatever they disagree with. All they have to do is claim engagement in the industry is hateful to women, and they can use the law to go after those who do engage with it.From what I have read about the act, I can’t see any part that would target TERB, LL or other escort related site. How do you think the politicians, foreign staff in Ottawa figure out who to see? Terb will be fine.I didn’t read the Bill of course but how long before they use this bill to shut down sites like LL and TERB? And any other agency site out there.
Not so, the definition of hate speech I agree is overly broad, but it’s not “whatever they disagree with”.I think you have too much faith in humanity. I have seen discussion on how to get away with rape on this board. I have been given celebratory messages of my own sexual assaults openly posted in the lounge. Messages saying I deserved it, deserved the beatings I got from ex, etc. or “victim blaming by saying what do I expect for being an hooker”. All of it.Not so, the definition of hate speech I agree is overly broad, but it’s not “whatever they disagree with”.
“The Bill defines “hate speech” as the content of a communication that expresses detestation or vilification of an individual or group of individuals on the basis of prohibited grounds of discrimination.”
So review and discussion of services that sex workers provide could hardly be deemed hate speech.
