Looking for intel on Heat Pumps.

Would greatly appreciate your experience or knowledge on Heat Pumps, considering installing one in my home.

Seen some intel herein, however, not within a thread especially for it.

Thanks in advance

I'm an HVAC installer. I have one in my home, and even though it's not good quality, and undersized; I still save lots of money per heating season

I'd recommend the Mitsubishi Zubba series, good to -25C and comes with electric heater backup. The upfront costs are offset by government grants
Contact a reputable HVAC company to get more details

Can someone do a comparison of a heat pump versus conventional furnace/air conditioner?

Which technology, air to air , air to water etc, and comments on your preference, and estimate, knowing the cost can vary somewhat,

Currently have a gas forced air with reasonable vents. Assume medium size house.

Will not work in very cold weather.

Rentals are a scam.

Unsightly in your living room.

Cold weather: On average, Toronto sees average daily temp below -25C for about 1-2 days a year. Therefore a heat pump installed correctly will heat your home for 99% or more of the heating season. And for those cold days, you would have your auxillary heating, either an electric element in an air handler, or a gas furnace.

Rentals: yes stay away from these scams

Aesthetics: You are likely refering to ductless wall mounted heat pumps. These are meant for single rooms or houses without central air. A central air heat pump will use the same ductwork as the furnace thats already installed

Depending on your needs and which brands you prefer, Id say a price from 15-20k is likely. Contact a local trusted contractor for a free site visit and estimate. Honestly get 3 estimates

Thanks man really appreciate your time and information.

Have carried out a little research on it, and my plan is to also use some solar panels with inverter as a backup power source.

Any recommendations on brand.

The question is why a homeowner would throw $15k - $20k at a heat pump system, if he / she already has a gas furnace??

I have a 1200 sqft home that I installed an air2air heat pump in for $2400 dollars. Took me about 8 hours to install, mostly because the instructions were a revision behind the product. We have had it since Nov 2021 and there a marginal drop in my hydro bill, but the house is now several degrees warmer in the winter and cooler than using window a/c in the summer. Column one is September 2022, column 13 is October 2023

If you're happy with your gas furnace, then save your money.

If your furnace is too old or not reliable, then consider a heat pump replacement. The increased costs of heat pump vs new gas furnace are offset by government grant money and operating costs. My furnace runs on propane, and the price on LP varies alot, so Im glad that my heat pump saves me roughly $1500 a year in LP, vs the extra $300 it costs to run heat pump.

Thanks again and I appreciate your ingel amd support.

My furnace is 10 years old, and I am also looking for long-term solutions that are less costly or difficult to maintain in the future by my family, as I am getting there, if you know what I mean.

As indicated, I have many years in technology, and understand more than most the changes and vulnerability, of our dependence on technology, not to mention the political landscape, and business greed that will be at play.

Long term, includes a possible hybrid of solar, gas generator and heat pump, to support the existing electrical and gas equipment utilized.

Already have a gas and LP generator backup solution in place .

Not sure where you're getting your numbers from. My heat pump got installed when my 23 year old AC unit decided to give up. Couldn't get coolant for it as it was old and banned. Cost of the heat pump came out to $11k installed. With the $7100 rebate, the final cost was $3900 out of pocket. I have a hybrid system where the furnace comes on to help out the Heat Pump get up to temp quickly when the outdoor temperature is below -25C. Already went through one Toronto winter and the furnace came on to help out the heat pump maybe 5 times. My gas bill went down by 45% last year and electricity bill increase was minimal.

Heat pumps are incredibly efficient and used throughout Europe with great success. On average the energy output is four times greater than the electrical energy used to run it.

I just used the numbers that others in the thread provided.

But I found your post interesting and helpful anyway.
