I agree, some breeds don't like other dogs. It's up to the owner to know their dog well enough when it should and shouldn't be leashed.
My dog was attacked by an off-leash Giant Shnauzer. My dog was off-leash, his dog was off-leash, I went to leash mine to signal to him to do the same, unfortunately he didn't and sure enough his dog came up on mine and attacked her while she was on leash.
I was real restrained because obviously the dog is like your kid but I did tell him the next time he and his dog wouldn't be so lucky in the next encounter and we did bump into each other one more time and he walked the other way.
lol my dog was a German Shepherd mix, not a "doofy labradoodle" sounds like you got your pre-conceived notions about certain breeds in place.
All that said I should add, there are a lot of dog owners that brought their big dogs to the leash free and their dogs would cause problems inside the leash free areas. The fairweather owners who would only take their dogs out once a day or only on the weekends.
Which is another reason I preferred walking my dog wherever or outside the leash free zone, way too many people with zero recall, or a good relationship with their dogs.
Just because it's "leash free" doesn't mean you or your dog will be 100% safe.
