Wayne Gretzky scored 182 points for the 1977-78 Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds in his only full season in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League. Who led that league in assists for the season, won the scoring title, and won the Red Tilson Trophy as the OMJHL's most outstanding player?

Answered correctly by unassuming.

This is some crazy kind of career stat line. A late bloomer it seems.
Dallas Keuchel initially came to mind but no way did he ever have 300 K's in a season. And given the amount of IP per season it has to be an 80's or 90's pitcher.
I'm not sure its right but I'll say Frank Viola?

Nope.

Frank Viola did not begin his Major League career with the New York Mets, and he never had more than 211 strikeouts in a season.

Not being able to get this one frustrated me more than any other. As I had made my two guesses already, went and checked the Cy Young History on baseball reference.... and all I can say is I can't believe I missed it. I was sniffing around in the wrong range of seasons. It was one of the more iconic seasons of that era in part due to the outlier, an era I remember more than others

If I had provided the season years, there would be no challenge that question.

A Jeopardy! type game with those sorts of questions, maybe pitting a superfan against say, Bob Costas and Tony LaRussa would be interesting. In some cases, a specific number stands out, in others, a mental picture is formed of the player's athleticism, or lack thereof.

I used to keep a copy of Who's Who in Baseball in the bathroom for dump reading, and I had competitive teams in Rotisserie Leagues from 1987-94, so I would do pretty well in this game for players in the late 1960's - mid 1990's era. I wouldn't get very many of the post 1970's hockey players.

What's his name?

Tom Gordon I think. Did not recognize immediately on first go around , but KC Startr turned to closer and finally clued in.
Correct!

Tom "Flash" Gordon played in A, AA, AAA and the Major Leagues in 1988. At that time, he had already fathered five children with four different baby mamas.

What's his name?

Joe Rudi? Not really familiar with his stats but I know he was a fairly solid player and I think I remember reading him as a good glove man.

2nd in MVP voting suggest he was on a good team as his stats were quite good, but not spectacular either. So I'm thinking this was Oakland in the 70s.
Correct!

Joe Rudi was briefly the property of the Boston Red Sox on June 15, 1976. A's owner Charles O Finley sold Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the Bosox for $1 Million each, but Commissioner Bowie Kuhn voided the deal.

I quoted the post where he asked the question #3,311. And I still say It's Mike Scott

What's his name?

I suspect this is Davey Johnson - the rare 43 HR season for a second baseman clicked, as he had an unremarkable career otherwise. I think that was the year the Braves had some sort of record for 30 HR or 40 HR hitters, which is why I'm familiar with that season.
Correct!

The 1973 Atlanta Braves had three player who hit 40 or more home runs. Hank Aaron and Darrell Evans were the other two.
