Cant save people who don’t want to be saved.
You're certainly not going to save drug addicts by giving them drugs. Treatment to get them off the drugs is the only way. After all, it's an addiction. Which is very hard to break without help.

Except wages ( not just for the lower quintiles) adjusted for inflation have been stagnant for decades……
yes they are, but ultimately people should find work that they can negotiate such things. if a person has low skills that the majority of people out there can offer they have no negotiating power. people have the power to walk and find other work. unfortunately peoples choices in life may lock them in to having to eat shit.

Immigrant arrives in Canada with just the shirt on his back, a wife and a young child and no English. 10 years later he owns a house. 15 years later he owns two houses. 20 years later his 3 kids are all in university.

How did he do it you ask? Number one he wasn't born in Canada (that is a huge advantage). Number two he wasn't afraid of hard work (that is another huge advantage).

Who is he? He is my Portuguese neighbour. His story is common among my Portuguese and Italian neighbours.

Next, I'll tell you about my Korean neighbour.

What work?

We live in a gig economy now where people work with no set hours, no rights, no benefits.
You get companies like uber putting downward pressure on wages yet still unable to turn a profit.
Unions used to negotiate for workers but they've been poo pooed by the right wing for decades.

So now you get housing getting too expensive, food too expensive, health care not covering mental health and that ends up with more people on the streets.

Food bank usage is up because food prices have skyrocketed. That's the number one reason. Inflation, rent, housing prices are all up as well. That goes for cities all across Canada. So if you're going to blame all that on Doug Ford, then you're completely out of touch with reality. If you think simply raising the minimum wage will solve all these problems, you haven't a clue at to how the economy works as a whole. Good thing you're not making decisions in Ontario.
I'm not blaming DoFo for those things, I'm blaming him for making the problem worse and not trying to fix it.
JT is giving parents cheaper day care, though DoFo is screwing that up.
JT is giving people dental as well.
What has DoFo done to make anything better? All he's done is cut education, cut rent protections, backed the big grocery chains, cut health services and tried to cut wages on everyone he can.

lots of work out there. I look through indeed and could go across canada. my skills arent even the most sought after. sure it means they may have to move, or do something not in their field, or they dislike, but its money.

what percentage of the jobs out there are gig jobs?

people have the option to leave uber and find other work. not as if it a job that requires a high level of skills and it is probably an over saturated market of excess drivers.

unions have good and bad sides. that is a can of worms, that I sit on the fence with.

people on the streets is nothing new. the situation has gotten worse. I dont think the government will be able to fix it. for some reason when government gets involved it makes things worse. they will dump more money into solving the problem which will exponentially grow the problem.

We need population control. Release a virus into a city, lets call it divoc-19, target it to go after people who do drugs and those who are homeless. It might kill others, but oh well. If all else fails, provoke russia to launch their nukes and all the worlds homeless population will be eliminated, including us, but oh well.

Why is food bank usage rocketing up so high?

people like food and to eat?

Im not disputing that shit has gotten more expensive and that people are using the food banks more.

people made poor decisions way back when (not related to now, spending more on things they dont really need, buying a home that was more than what they needed, going on vacations, having children they could not afford, depending on government kick backs, not saving and spending, picking fields of work that did not have the jobs to hire them, choosing fields of work that poorly compensated, choosing post secondary education that had a poor ROI, massive consumer debt, I could go on about the decisions people make). people do not like living under their means. they live paycheck to paycheck.

its been a compounding plethora of bad choices people have made, which government had a part in exhasterbating(cheap debt and mismanagement).

more than likely the government will bail everything out and push the problem further down the road to the next generation.

personally I live on less than half I make. I dont live extravagantly. I live minimally. people dont want to live that life. people will live minimally when they have no other option and even then still want internet access.

why is food bank usage rocketing? because people rather have internet, smokes, and game consoles, phones (insert whatever other shit people dont need) rather then food.

The wokies don't believe in personal accountability. Everything is the government/rich people's fault.

So your only solution is that everyone quit their jobs and find a better paying job?
How does that work for everyone needing the food bank?

Personally I think the pitchforks will come out eventually if people can't afford food and lodging doing full time work.

I would propose a three year pilot project.

1. Death by firing squad for drug dealers of controlled substances.
2. A three year incarceration for those found in possession of controlled substances with mandatory substance abuse therapy,
3. Increased public and international shaming of China and Mexico for supply and peddling fentanyl components.

Who is facilitating, enabling and profiting from the smuggling of cocaine and opiates and illegal firearms into Canada and delivering to the streets ?

I know you're joking but it is common around the world.

My buddy just got back from living in the Phillipines. He says Manila is the Wild West of the Developing World, but, drug use and the crime it brings are almost non-existant. A few years ago a former President declared War On Drugs and mandated extrajudicial executions on the spot by the police for dealers found with evidence. People found with personal use marijuana were merely given 10 years of hard time.

Oh, nobody's recommending that for Canada of course, but my takeaway is that solutions are not obvious or easy -- just possible.

Duterte was hardcore, someone who actually dealt with serious problems. All we get is thoughts and prayers and more bullshit empty promises. Hey Canada!....how about a bullet in the head upon conviction for serious violent crimes? Perhaps the sub-humans who decided to spray bullets around Queen st. a few days ago would have thought twice, or the subway stabber...yeah, who the fuck am I kidding. Anyone with their eyes open knows there is no fixing anything, anymore. This country is weak and will suffer at the hands of criminals.

The poor and unfortunate are always a blemish and a drain on society. The normative solution is to care and provide for unfortunates and not kill them, in our society.
that's not true. Normative means the the thing we o by default. As a family who is actually Brought homeless people into there home If what you said was true there would be no homeless in Toronto at all. Perhaps people by default wish people well but action is dependent on other factors.

Just lace some downtown McDonalds dumpster's tossed food with a whack of fentanyl.
From what the cops/cbsa have seized from a shipment at the border or YYZ.

Then we can either off a homeless person or a raccoon.
Both of which are too populous in the city and in need of culling.

If it is a strong enough dose could even be termed caring euthanasia.

Of course if a real crack head got it they probably would have enough tolerance to somewhat live.
And then what started as a good plan gets cash from a lawsuit into the hands of a junkie.

But that might be safer than reselling methadone to allow a junkie to get cash.
Because then there would be no methadone to be passed on.

Some people here are so harsh... people don't just decide to be homeless or be addicted to crack. You don't know what happened in their lives for them to have gotten to where they are. They also can't just stop using and live a "normal" life without a lot of help.

There's a reason why so many homeless people turn to drugs... what else have they got? The amount you get from welfare (OW or ODSP) is not survivable in Toronto, at least not if you want a permanent roof over your head. There's no more upward mobility when you can't even shelter yourself, it's a huge barrier that prevents you from getting a stable job or relationship or much of anything else. Sooner or later anyone would start giving up and start doing hard drugs, and once you're hooked and lose hope there's little chance of going back.

I think of them as more like victims in our society. The real source of the problem is that we allow people to get to that state in the first place. Now I don't pretend to know how we can solve the issue, but demonizing these folk is not the solution.
