/chuckle.
-just a few bullits.
The last serious recessionary period was the financial crises that started in 2008…….My how quickly we forget
And yes, we have seen numerous quarters of contraction since 2019
Worthless pedigrees.
There is truth to that.
Not sure when it really began, maybe the 80s.
But at some point parents (society) started putting enormous pressure on their kids to go to post. Many think it’s the only way to define success today. In fact, once boomers are done leaving the work force, many labour markets anticipate shortages. Everyone wants a pedigree, few want dirty jobs…Be that the trades, trucking, etc and etc.
Furthermore, on that topic. Is the school of thought that so many fields, have devalued the degrees. In short, supply>>>>demand.
We can see that, in the staggering numbers of kids that leave post with mountains of debt, and can’t find work in the related fields………
Numerous studies are also showing that Depression/anxiety is soaring amongst those in post. Mom/dad pressuring them to be Drs/Lawyers, when they just want to open a coffee shop. But that’s not what people/society think is a worthwhile and succesful life….mountains of debt, stiff competition for fewer jobs….
And in fact, these days, if you don’t have a pedigree of any kind. Have fun getting a job as a taxi driver, a mail room clerk at a big firm. Basically even entry level positions….Etc and so on..
-Rae days.
Came about because Bob Rae promised oodles of goodies to everyone, especially unionized public service employees, who to that point, historically supported the NDP….When to everyone surprise he won. Well he had to try and make good. He flushed Ontarios fiscal house down the toilet…Faced with out of control spending, debt, credit rating downgrades, he had to try and get it order. Hence Rae days. Unions bailed, got pissy, stopped supporting the NDP….and filling him the oh so popular “common sense revolution” but ever since Rae it’s been a shit show…but for what it’s worth, people obviously didn’t learn that painful lesson. We are in the same boat again. Mountains of debt, no money to try and close growing gaps in Healthcare, fix the good awful mess Hydro and rates are, no money for rainy days because the sun always shines. Etc etc.
It’s odd because ever since Rae we’ve had NDP, CON,LIB governments. All 3 political ideologies and nothing but problems. One common denominator (outside of everyone buying votes)
unionized public service employees, none more so….than those in
education.
As it relates to youth today. Boomers screwed the pooch.
