Unrest has flared nationwide, including in cities such as Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg and Lille as well as Paris where Nahel Merzouk,a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan descent, was shot on Tuesday in the Nanterre suburb.

His death, which was caught on video, has reignited longstanding complaints by poor, racially mixed, urban communities of police violence and racism.

In the centre of the southern city of Marseille, France's second largest, rioters looted a gun store on Friday night and stole some hunting rifles but no ammunition, Marseille police said. One individual was arrested with a rifle likely coming from the store, police said. The store was now being guarded by police.

Saturday brought the fifth consecutive night of nationwide violence and 700 more arrests. Some 45,000 police were on the streets with specialised elite units, armoured vehicles and helicopters brought in to reinforce its three largest cities, Paris, Lyon, and Marseille

Protests have also spread to Belgium and Switzerland.

Last night Attackers in France tried to set fire to the home of a suburban Paris mayor's home overnight and fired rockets at the official's fleeing wife and children.

Rioters ram-raided the home of a Paris suburb mayor, set the car alight and launched fireworks at his wife and young children as they fled during a fifth night of nationwide unrest

The incident has caused widespread shock and is being treated as attempted murder. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne described it as intolerable.

Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun was not at home, but his wife suffered a broken leg and a child was also hurt.

The degree of violence and destruction is pretty shocking, although France tends to do this sort of shit once or twice a year. This appears to be the worst example for a while.

There were major anti vaxx riots as well a couple of years back.

It appears to essentially be a French version of the BLM protests.

It is just a matter of time for social unrest to erupt in the rest of Europe.
Rise of right-wing politics may fix that problem.

Have you ever been in France? They are socialist country you know? they would not mind a tighter grip on immigration but fucking do not touch all of their socialized measures already in place.

No Americans can understand that.

I don't know how you've made this determination, but anti-Islam sentiment makes some sense based on the brutal murders of French people by Muslims noted in the Twitter post.
Hate is a two way street. Muslims are not psychopaths to just murder the French. There is lots of racism, police brutality, racial profiling, anti-immigrant sentiments etc., in France. It is one of the most islamaphobic European states. That breeds anger from the Muslim community towards the French. These riots are as much against police brutality as they are anti-France!

But no one should ignore the other side of the medal.

France as welcomed immigrants for years. They provided them with free education, free healthcare and many of their social program.

Now it's turning back on them.

In Quebec in the past few years we took many measure to separate religion from public duties. We got insulted as racist when actually what we want to avoid is exactly what's happening in France.

You can come to our country but be ready to leave your religious belief at home and only at home. In schools, hospitals and all public services you will need to oblige to our rules.
