Hey, this is nothing new. I can recall how the number and size of the snack 'wagon wheels' from back in the 70's got smaller when I was a wee one.

And sometimes I don't complain.
Last fall as a part of a suburban dumpster dive route I head out on on quiet early Sunday am's:
I netted 23 packages of still in date bacon from a Shoppers dumpster.
Whose only crime was to be packed as 500g, and the new packaging and its associated shelf/cooler space was now tagged for 350g packages.

Reducing package size and maintaining the same price is not a new practice. Lately what we're seeing is this practice being applied to more common staples, making it more noticeable by consumers. So media can't spin the news they will need to report more comprehensively revealing the price per weight or unit. Don't think that will happen though.

Are we getting back to the package sizes of the 1960’s, when obesity was a rarity?

I also experienced a similar shrinkflation with a Longo’s meat lasagna. After eating a quarter of it, I had to double check the package to make sure I didn’t accidentally buy vegetarian. It wasn’t; but the skimpy amount of meat made it taste like vegetarian. Going forward, I will make my own - it will be cheaper that way and there will be plenty meat.

Except it won't be cheaper because the cost of the individual parts has risen while their sizes has decreased.

Yeah but they have to pay for packaging anyway. The cost would be in re-jigging the machines that fill the packaging. In today's technology, re-sizing packaging wouldn't be a factor. How long would it take to return to profit margins after re-jigging the machines ? It's the cost of the raw materials that have the biggest is influence.

Not sure what you mean here. I'm talking about the price of making the lasagna yourself will not be cheaper than buying the now crapified pre made stuff because the size of each individual component for a homemade lasagna (or any other recipe you want to make fresh) has both shrunk and gone up in price at the same time.

Companies tuning their machinery to new packaging sizes is a peanuts job when most of the equipment is controlled by computers.

This is nothing new. The only "shrinkflation" is size of the brain for the consumers who are too lazy to do the math when they buy.

There is nothing to see here.

The price of products is going to go up, there’s just no getting around that.
The question is do you want to pay a higher price for the same size product, or do you want to pay the same price for the slightly smaller package.

Except the companies are double dipping, raising the price and shrinking the sizes at the same time. and no you can't "it is what it is" this shit when these motherfuckers are turning around and announcing record profits year over year. and blatantly saying "we can blame it on inflation" in their earnings calls.

We ordered Swiss Chalet delivery on the weekend. Seemed like the food in a meal combo and the sides were less.

With obesity rates as high as they are, it is a good thing that we’re all being forced to reduce our caloric intake.
