How many of them buy a drink to use the wifi and use the place to work since they can't afford the rent on office spaces?
It's unfair to make him have to justify his assertion. It's like making Don Cherry have to justify his comment about "it's the immigrants who don't wear poppies". It's like Phil saying that there is no climate change because his grandfather didn't notice any changes. (Sorry, Phil. I couldn't resist.)

I was at the one in Vaughn. I believe that none of them are in Metro Toronto. All 647 area. GTA, but not Metro.
It's VaughAn not Vaughn, and area code 647 is TORONTO, not the surrounding area, and yeah Chuck's adds a 3% charge which I saw advertised a few different places in the restaurant. It's a small price to pay for low cost grub and booze. I'm gonna have to check out Brampton though cuz Pickering doesn't have a Ho Row at the bar!

I stand corrected as I knew that but didn't pay close enough attention.

and area code 647 is TORONTO, not the surrounding area,
416 was the area code of Toronto BEFORE there ever was a GTA, which was only created once they took the suburbs into accout. And 647 originated outside of Metro Toronto.

and yeah Chuck's adds a 3% charge which I saw advertised a few different places in the restaurant.
I guess that's a waste of signage and also poor judgement to assume that every customer sees it instead of just adding the 3% directly onto the menu price. It seems much simpler, doesn't it? The price listed is the price you pay. What a novel idea.

This is wrong on just so many levels we really don't have time to allow you a second derailing of this thread lol

416 was EVERYTHING in the Horseshoe area. It covered everything from Niagara Falls, Kitchener, Cramhae (Big Apple), Port Credit etc. You would need to travel quite a distance to cross over into the 613 code (and 519 did not even exist at the time)
It was NOT until very late 90s that 416 became an exclusive Toronto only area code (and this happened well after establishment of both GTA and the CMA)
647 was METRO TORONTO ONLY. Always has been, always will be (I am thinking you were confusing 647 with the 905 area code based on your comments)

I noticed OC who you responded to also agrees the 3% charge is very visible in the restaurant, even to a first time visitor (such as myself) with no pre warnings from others

You are a brave man to disagree/criticize Shack (even if in jest). He claims to have many best friends on the Board and they will come to beat you up.

Yeah, I noticed the 3% right away. No big deal. Making a mountain out of a molehill. However, I do agree it would be better if they bury the 3% in the price.

Why would they rent office space to play video games and surf social media sites/apps?

This page has a good graphic on the history of 416, 519, and 613. The 416 area code hasn't materially changed since 1951 or so.

Train is now fully off the tracks... thanks...

Contrary to whatever is posted on Wiki*, yes MAJOR changes have occurred in past 25 years
Prior to this an entire generation of people lost their 416 area codes and raised such a massive stink over it that we changed our entire system of how geographical calling restrictions and area code overlays work
Population of the 905 area vastly outstrips the population of metro Toronto 416 so when that reassignment happened it was big

*it baffles me why people keep pointing to wiki as a source for anything, esp when wiki is often wrong, and even more frequently being misread/misquoted by trolls using them as a source of fact
I mean cmon even the page you quoted is about the history of the 519 area code... are you trying to tell us that places like Vaughan, Hamilton, Niagara or any of the cities discussed about EVER had a 519 code? No they ALL had 416 up to the mid 90s when the 905 split took place

I find it strange that guys here who can obviously afford hundreds or even thousands on their dicks but get all riled up about tipping a waitress or taxi driver or an SP.

If I get good service I tip all of them, 20% is my usual when the service is excellent.
With SP I usually bring wine, pastries and a small gift.

Why do I do that, simply because I can and I think they deserve it.
When I can’t afford it, I eat at home, walk, and jack off.

Oh give me a break. Really? It's a "self-serve"........
The concept of tipping has been totally corrupted.

This tip jars are everywhere now. I never put any money in them except one place. Jonny Burger at VP and Sheppard. They haven't changed their prices in like 32 years. Literally paying the same price for a cheeseburger combo as I did 32 year when I was 16. Other then that, fuck the tip jars.

I do tip at every restaurant as servers get paid way less then minimum wage because tips are expected, so if you don't tip it's kind like taking money directly out of their pocket.

There's absolutely no reason to tip an SP as they set their own rates and make incredible money. There's also no reason to tip a taxi driver. Yes it's a lousy wage but so is working McDonalds, Tim Horton's, Home Depot, etc....

Servers should always be tipped because they make a lower based on the very fact there is an expectation they will get tipped, and it's a much harder job then driving a car.

Overcharging at restaurants

My expectations were not high when I went to a Chuck's Roadhouse a few weeks ago but their commercials made it look appealing and the prices on their steaks looked great. A 21oz. porterhouse was no more than $25 and their steaks are advertised as AAA.

They were fairly busy on a Saturday night and finally a table opened up for us. Just as we were getting seated, this guy (owner? manager?) stops us and says we can't sit there because they needed the table for a party of 21 arriving shortly so we had to sit at the counter, not as amenable for conversing with the rest of our party. The party of 21 never showed.

Most of our main dishes arrived tepid and one was actually cold. But, as I said, my expectations were not high.

Then we get the bill and for some reason I checked it closer than normal and between the subtotal and the tax I see a charge of 3%. I asked the person behind the counter what that was. She said, and I quote "It is an Honest to Goodness fee". WTF?

I paid the bill but before we left I tracked down the manager dude and politely questioned, saying that I'd never heard of that. He said, and again I quote, "It helps us keep our prices down". At that point, still at normal voice level, I let him have it. Your prices are deceptive. We unnecessarily had to sit at the counter, the food was cold and now this stupid, stupid charge and even stupider explanation. He said he was terribly sorry about our experience and then proudly hands me a $10 off coupon for our next meal. (Now that I think of it he had a LOT of those cards in his pocket. Not surprising in retrospect.) I said, but the bad experience was tonight. He said, "That's why I gave you the coupon." Me: "If you were sincerely sorry you would do something for us now." He said that he was sincere and continued to defend. I basically called him out on his bullshit (I did not swear), crumpled up the coupon and saw the incredulous look on his face as I tossed the coupon on a counter and walked out.

Does anybody else have tales of getting overcharged in such a deceptive manner?

I'm not cheap at all. In fact I tip and give way more then I should considering my income. Having that said, on principle I might have demanded a refund of that 3% based on the fact it's totally deceitful. I've never even heard of that before. My guess is because so many people this day and age don't tip, so they're doing stupid shit like that to make up for it. Society and the restaurant industry has to get this shit figured out man. Either pay these people a proper wage so tipping isn't part of their salary, or just add a mandatory 15% service fee. The whole thing is so stupid. I used to be a restaurant manager so I can tell you that anyone who makes the argument of "I don't tip at McDonalds, why should I tip a server?" simply has no idea what they are talking about. Being a server is a way harder job. Now....there is another convo to be had about the fairness of what cooks make compared to the servers.

Yeah, but millennials don't drive either so its obviously not for them.
I think you're confusing Millennials with Generation Z.

Millennials were teenagers at the turn of the last century, which makes them all at least mid 30's now. I find Millennials to be 2 groups. Older and Younger. The older ones are fine to work with, excellent even. The younger ones can be a hit and miss.

Now the Gen Zedders are a whole different story. They are the ones who can't drive, expect the government to look after them (or better yet mummy and daddy) and are always going on about "my anxiety", "my depression", "boomer suck", being "triggered", made to feel "unsafe". They are big believers in higher taxes and draconian laws to tell you how you are going to live. They worship at the alter of climate change and they are convinced that we are all doomed to boiled in our own juices. They will literally start to cry if you get stern with them at work about their poor work quality or poor performance.

As to tipping, I usually don't get worked up about tipping. I will tip servers well, my barber, cab drivers, the guy who tows my car when it breaks down. I will even tip the guys who brought my new washer and dryer and took the old ones away.

But I refuse to tip the working at the concession stand at the BNS Centre for selling me a bag of M&Ms for 15 bucks. or the guy working at the food court at Sherway Gardens who sold me a cookie (seriously) or any contractor I hire. I've never tipped an MPA or SP, they make a ton of dough, tax free. And I'm having a hard time with takeout food and the bakery down the street looking for tips.

So I do draw the line.

I dunno. My perspective is that a rate an escort sets is your basic ticket to play. That should get you basic GFE services. But for instance, say she goes out of her way to accommodate a scheduling request, or she indulges my makeup, hair, and/or clothing request, if she offers unsolicited refreshments, if she offers BBBJ vs CBJ, if she offers DFK vs LK, if she's super engaged, passionate and delivers an overall really high quality experience, if she does her best not to be a massive clock watcher then I will absolutely tip her, and if I'm going to tip it will always be a very meaningful tip, not a trivial gesture of a monetary pittance just to say I did. On these occasions, I consider it a gesture of personal appreciation, and an investment in future high quality experiences as a repeat customer.
