Hello everyone,

If you're in market for an electric vehicle (SUV or bigger) in 3-5 years, would you consider cybertruck as an option? If so, have you already added your name in the waiting list with the deposit? How did you narrow down the choice?

I've read the F150 Lighting is useless if you want to tow anything.
Yes. It’s not that the truck doesn’t have enough power to pull the load; but doing so cuts significantly into the truck’s range.

It you need to tow heavy loads you can only manage short distances between recharging.

As much as I'd like to go electric, I have reservations about how practical an electric car/truck would be especially for long distance trips especially in the icy cold winters we have in Ontario. And then there's being stuck in a traffic jam. Nope, I'll stay with what I have until no choice but to go electric. In fact, I'd rather have a hybrid rather than electric vehicle.

I keep saying that the Tesla Cybertruck looks like the alt-mode of one of the Autobots who was introduced in S3 of the G1 Transformers cartoon.

Not looking for a new vehicle, hybrid will be my choice.
Have to consider the high cost and supply chain issues of a replacement battery in 8-10 years.

Funny, I've said it looks like a Tholeon ship from Star Trek the Original Series.

Whatever it is, it is THEE fucking ugliest thing on wheels I've ever seen.

So the answer to the original question is no.

IMO, hybrid is the worst choice between gas or electric for individuals. Hybrid cars are more complex since you have two systems. Yet you still have to maintain the gas engine. Either go full electric or stick with gas. Fleets are a different story since you have teams of people doing regular maintenance.

Thank you for the responses.. I do understand why some of you won't consider Musk's vehicles. In my perspective, I will choose rather an intelligent design with impeccable quality ignoring the inventor's qualities... It's just me. I'm very minimalist and only pursue things when absolute need. I'm not saying it's essential...Even though I live only less than 3 decades on this planet, I learned few things..one of it is, if a product made out of passion, hard work and intelligence, it'd last longer than anything else comes out of solely a business mind. In the mean time, I'm a firm believer in a team decision rather an individual one. In that aspect, I see that there is no votes for the truck thus far :)

Never go anything Tesla. That managed through horrid build quality to somehow give the electric vehicle the reliability of a FIAT [Fix it again Tony]

I think it's Musk who has said it's a tech company not a car company and it shows.

Also you will be over paying because he has his cultists and fanboys lined up with that "Shut up and take my money" attitude. Get something else, there are other options out there.

If you really only pursue or buy things when you absolutely need them, then don't bother with a vehicle at all. There's a huge cost to them in gas, insurance, maintenance and most importantly depreciation of it over time. Take an Uber and shift those costs to someone else.

If you absolutely must get a vehicle because you don't have good transit or Uber access, then research the most reliable vehicle. Toyota is one of the most reliable brands out there, but do your research carefully. Even they can have problems too.

Thank you! I do actually need a SUV...I don't need a truck per se. But, Model Y does not suit my needs ...including I'll have to charge in Perth or Peterborough in order to get to my destination. I do quite a bit of travelling between GTA & Ottawa.. So, Uber won't work. I do agree with you on the vehicle cost..it really adds up for sure. My work actually requires travelling, so it's considered as essential :)

Well, I see his designs are driven by software first..and the car is always on their network to receive software updates, etc. so, I'd agree on that, it's really a tech company.. and probably SpaceX too in that sense.

"Need" vs "want" are easily confused. There's nothing wrong with an SUV, but think about how often you're going to be lugging cargo around. Many people are lugging empty space around and burning extra gas. You'd be surprised how much space is in the trunk of full sized or even compact sedans these days.

Now that it's out in production and many reviews are in, what is your opinion on it?

I think it's ugly. Besides, I don't need a truck. Only when EV's are the same price, are as convenient as ICE vehicle to operate, have the same range and take the same amount of time to "fill" will the masses adopt them. If it's not convenient, people won't buy them, period. Forcing the population to strictly adopt EVs by 2035 is nuts.

They estimate we'll need 442,000 public charging stations across Canada to meet demands by 2035. There's currently 25,000 and they're installing them at the rate of 6,000 per year. At this rate they'll be 351,000 short. Obviously production will increase, but there's a long, long way to go before people will buy in.

"Battery electric vehicle registrations accounted for the entire decline, posting a 6.9 per cent market share, down from 8.4 per cent in Q4 2022. Zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) registrations in Canada lost a full percentage point of market share in the first quarter of 2023 after hitting a record high in Q4 of last year."

"EVs sit on the market an average 82 days versus 64 days for gas-powered vehicles, it said. In response to slowing demand, automakers like Ford and GM are cutting production. EVs are still too expensive for most people, even with government incentives, surveys say."
