Here's the thing about fake Rolex's. And fake any luxury brands/goods.
For anyone that would recognize it, it is always glaringly obvious that it is a fake. And the person who you tried to impress, thinks way less of you than if you had no watch. In fact, it is a sure sign of an insecure phony wannabe.
And more specifically about Rolex. Among those who watches matter, Rolex is now pretty much considered along the lines of something a "Used Car Dealer" would wear. Some exception for particular authentic vintage models or wearing the watch you inherited is made. Both otherwise, a Rolex is a bit gauche.

Nevertheless most celebrities wear (and many collect) Rolexes and a SS Rolex is a better hedge against inflation than many many other beautiful and less common watches.

I understand and agree with you, but it is still regarded as a gauche watch amongst high society. And I don't consider being a Celebrity as being high society. As an investment, sure. In good times. But as many have found out, the liquidity of these vanity investment watches is low and you end up dumping them for whatever the broker/jeweller wants to give you.. to make their end too.
What is high society though if not celebrities? I would like to have friends who wear shit that only snobs would understand like FP Journe and to a lesser degree Lange. But in reality ppl who have new money mostly wear Rolexes, AP and Richard Mille. People who have old money wear inherited vintage watches.
PS - the resale on SS Rolexes is insane today and it’s not hard to liquidate.

There is not a watch enthusiast or collector on the planet that would tell you that Rolex is a brand that only 'used car dealers' should wear. 100% full stop.
Rolex is Rolex bc they have done many amazing things over a long period of time. Among them are to build incredibly robust and timeless pieces. That's why a sub from today looks remarkably similar to one of 50 years ago and why every year at Baselworld (show in Basel Switzerland where manufacturers release their new pieces every year) if Rolex even thinks of changing classic models like the Daytona or Sub by even a fraction of a millimetre, people go insane. The lengths that Rolex goes to manufacture a watch is quite literally insane. They produce virtually every piece of the watch themselves, from scratch. Totally vertically integrated. Raw materials to finished product. That is CRAZY and unlike every other watch co on the planet save for a few that are far lesser known.
What has become gauche (as a result of Rolex's unbelievable marketing) are the pieces that are purchased and have had dials and bezels and bracelets swapped out or modified and covered with diamonds and nonsense like that. Unfortunately, that has become incredibly popular among the young and rich folks and popularized via social media etc. This is what newcomers believe Rolex stands for which it does not.
Amongst even watch snobs, a white gold Daytona or vintage sub or a day-date etc are very well respected and classic watches.
Ya it sucks for people that want to get into the watch game that every fan-boy in Manhattan or on Bay st is wearing a SS sub or Sport model Rolex of some sort. The result being that Rolex watches are priced astronomically high on the secondary market and in some cases, even some AD's are selling over list (criminal). You walk into a Rolex AD and ask for any SS watch and they will either show you to the door or roll out a list a mile long and put your name on the bottom of it and tell you they will call you in a few years. If you have a history at a dealer then that is a different story.
Long story short and as @Leimonis said, even those who choose to wear a Patek, or JLC or ALS etc, none would thumb their nose at a Rolex wearer (aside from the aforementioned) and all will own one/some themselves even if they are just safe queens.
Edit: I don't know if it's a coincidence, but two of my vices in life start with a 'W'. Watches and women. Regardless of how many you have, you always seem to want more

As I've posted in the watch collector thread, I'm a long time watch enthusiast and over the years have amassed a personal collection of more than 500 pieces of all kinds, from G-Shock all the way to the top end Pateks. I love the hobby, and am out buying and fondling watches in boutiques all the time.
Personally, I'd have advised you to go with a high quality Daytona homage. At least then you won't get razzed for wearing a 'fake rolex'.

In fact, March for me is G-Shock month and I wear a different one each day, morning and afternoon, every day. Thought it was cool because it's solar powered, has a digital display, light, world time, stop watch/timer, alarm, chime, and automatically receives the correct time from radio signals. A lot of women have complimented me on the watch, saying they like it. Little do they know it's a Casio. I've worn Casio all my life.
